Sydney Sweeney Box Office Bomb ‘Christy’ Hits HBO Max This Weekend

Okay, so everyone’s talking about Sydney Sweeney and how huge The Housemaid has become, but I recently found out about a film she did right before that which…didn’t do so well. In fact, it was a pretty big flop! Released just weeks before The Housemaid took off, this movie only made $2 million at the box office, despite costing $15 million to make. But hey, now you can check it out for yourself – it’s finally hitting HBO Max.

Opening in theaters on November 7, 2025, this R-rated drama features Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, a celebrated professional boxer. The film tells the story of Martin’s career, charting her rise to fame as a boxing icon in the 1990s, and also depicts the harrowing 2010 attempted murder by her husband and former coach, James V. Martin.

The sports drama, Christy, directed by David Michôd, features Ben Foster as the abusive husband, along with Merritt Weaver as her mother, Ethan Embry as her father, and Katy O’Brian as her future wife, Lisa Holewyne. Originally released on December 9, 2025, and performing poorly in theaters, the film will be available to stream on HBO Max starting this Friday, April 10th. If you missed it in cinemas, you can now watch it at home this weekend.

‘Christy’ Set An Unfortunate Record for Sydney Sweeney

Despite being shown in over 2,000 theaters, the movie Christy had a very poor opening weekend, earning only $1.3 million. Things got even worse the following week when the film set a disappointing record for everyone involved.

The movie Christy had a disastrous second weekend, earning only $108,487 – a huge 92% decrease from its opening weekend. This made it the biggest second-weekend drop ever recorded at the box office.

The movie Christy is estimated to have lost around $25 million due to its high production and marketing costs combined with poor ticket sales. This followed another financial failure for director Sweeney, the thriller Eden, which only earned $2.5 million despite costing $35 million to make.

‘Christy’ Received Rave Reviews

Although Christy wasn’t a commercial success, it received very positive feedback from viewers who saw it. While critics are somewhat divided, with a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences overwhelmingly enjoyed the film, giving it a 94% rating. Many viewers praised the performances of Sydney Sweeney and Ben Foster, with some even calling them Oscar-worthy, and generally found the movie to be surprisingly good.

Even though the movie Christy didn’t do very well in theaters—likely because it’s a sports drama about a lesser-known story—it’s expected to perform well on HBO Max. Many viewers are likely to start watching it soon, and it could quickly become one of the platform’s most popular titles.

Okay, so Sydney Sweeney is everywhere lately! We’re getting the final season of Euphoria on HBO this month, and then she’s jumping to the big screen in The Devil Wears Prada 2 on May 1st. But that’s not all – she’s also coming back as Millie Calloway in The Housemaid’s Secret, though we’ll have to wait a bit for that one – it’s scheduled for December 17th, 2027. It’s good to see her taking on such a diverse range of projects!
