One of the quickest ways to show a character is truly evil is to make them a demon. Demons and devils are common in anime, and for good reason. Showing hellish realms on screen often allows creators to explore the darkness and cruelty that exists in the real world, reflecting humanity’s own flaws.
Anime features a huge variety of devil characters, ranging from classic horned demons to those who hide their true nature, and even some explicitly named Satan. These characters are often incredibly powerful, and a few are so strong they could potentially cause global destruction if they were real.
Sadao Maou Goes From Dark Lord to Part-Timer
Sadao Maou, the main character of the comedy The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, was once the king of hell. After failing to conquer the world of Ente Isla, he finds himself in modern Tokyo, stripped of his powers. To make a living, he takes a part-time job at MgRonald’s, where he surprisingly applies his desire for control and order to flipping burgers and working his way up the ladder.
I’ve noticed that Sadao in The Devil Is a Part-Timer! isn’t always his powerful self, but he can briefly regain his abilities by feeding off the fear and hopelessness of those around him. When he does transform into his true, demonic form, he’s incredibly strong, can fly, use dark magic, and even heal quickly – plus, he’s really intelligent. However, because he doesn’t get to use these powers often, he’s actually not as powerful as some other devils you see in anime.
Akuto Sai is a Devil-in-the-Making in Demon King Daimao
Akuto Sai, the main character of Demon King Daimao, begins as a hopeful high school student with dreams of becoming a priest. However, a school test unexpectedly predicts he’ll become the Demon King, causing everyone to fear him. Despite wanting to help others, Akuto finds himself grappling with powerful new abilities and trying to show he’s a good person, even though fate seems to have other plans.
Akuto is a powerful being, even though he strives to be kind. He can manipulate all forms of magical energy, letting him create or destroy anything, and even control demons and cause widespread devastation. Throughout the story of Demon King Daimao, Akuto struggles to control his abilities, but as the series unfolds, he grows immensely powerful, eventually surpassing the limits of the physical world.
Femto Commits Berserk’s Deadliest Betrayal
When the story of Berserk begins, Griffith appears to have some good qualities despite his intense ambition to become a ruler. He genuinely cares for and relies on his mercenary group, the Band of the Hawk, particularly Guts. While he uses questionable tactics to gain power within the royal court, he doesn’t initially seem malicious, though the presence of his Crimson Behelit hints at a dark future.
Facing certain death, Griffith made the terrible choice to sacrifice his comrades, transforming into Femto, a powerful demon and member of the God Hand. As Femto, he gained incredible powers, including the ability to warp space and blend the physical and spiritual worlds. However, it’s not just his power that defines him, but the deep betrayal and emotional cruelty he inflicts on others.
Rimuru Tempest Ascends to Godliness in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Rimuru Tempest, the main character of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, was a regular person in his past life. After being reborn in a fantasy world, he develops incredible powers and manages to bring together a nation of monsters. Starting as a simple blue slime, he grows stronger and eventually becomes a True Demon Lord, earning him the position of leader for all creatures.
I’m absolutely fascinated by Rimuru! His core ability, ‘Predator,’ is just incredible – he can basically swallow anything, figure out how it works, and then use it himself! That’s how he’s built up such a diverse skillset, from bending space and time to mastering all sorts of magic, even things like controlling nothingness as his ultimate form, Void God Azathoth. But what’s really cool is that despite having all this immense power, he’s still a genuinely good leader – kind and practical. He’s powerful, yes, but definitely not your typical evil anime villain!
Sirzechs Lucifer Could Cause Mass Destruction in High School DxD
Many people dismiss High School DxD as simply another anime with excessive fanservice and a harem setup, but there’s more to it than that. The story takes place in a world where devils and humans coexist, and Sirzechs Lucifer is an incredibly powerful devil. As the older brother of Rias Gremory and one of the Four Great Satans who govern the underworld, he possesses immense power, though he often appears laid-back and playful.
Sirzechs, being a full-blooded devil, possesses incredible demonic strength. He’s best known for his Power of Destruction, which allows him to completely obliterate anything he chooses. He also uses a technique called Ruin the Extinct, creating focused spheres of annihilation that can break through any protection. Despite having such destructive power, Sirzechs actually works to maintain peace between devils, angels, and fallen angels in the world of High School DxD.
Akira Fudo Is the Most Tragic Devil in Devilman Crybaby
Akira Fudo is incredibly powerful in Devilman Crybaby, but the story of how he became the Devilman is deeply sad. His childhood friend, Ryo Asuka, persuaded him to take on demonic powers, believing it was the only way to stop the approaching army of devils and save humanity. However, the truth is…
Throughout the series, Akira grows more and more disturbed by his demonic nature, coinciding with rising fear and suspicion among humans about demons. Though incredibly powerful and believing he’s acting to protect people – even if it means causing widespread destruction – Akira ultimately proves no match for Satan.
Denji’s Strength Causes Gruesome Violence in Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man is well-known for its intense and graphic fight scenes, with much of the violence stemming from the main character himself. When Denji activates his power by pulling a cord, chainsaws sprout from his body – arms, legs, and even his head – which he uses to brutally attack his opponents. Plus, he can regenerate, meaning he can recover from injuries and even regrow lost limbs over time.
Denji is a devil-human hybrid, but his incredible power actually comes from Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. When Pochita merges with Denji in his devil form, he becomes an enormous, armored figure covered in chainsaws, far surpassing normal human strength.
Lucifero Is a Gravity-Defying Devil in Black Clover
Lucifero from Black Clover is one of the most powerful characters in the series, holding the highest rank in the demon hierarchy. As the supreme devil, he commands all other demons. Even showing only a fraction of his full power, Lucifero was incredibly strong, and it took a combined effort from powerful fighters like Asta, Yuno, and Yami Sukehiro to defeat him.
Lucifero’s gravity magic in Black Clover is incredibly powerful and frightening. If it were real, it could literally destroy the Earth. He can easily control gravity to crush enemies, stop them in their tracks, and take complete control of a battlefield. Even without actively fighting, his sheer presence warps everything around him, adding to his terrifying abilities.
Satan is the King of Devils in Blue Exorcist
As you’d expect from the ruler of Gehenna and the strongest demon in Blue Exorcist, this character is actually named Satan. He’s incredibly powerful, able to create destructive blue flames and take control of people or objects, usually with devastating results. Beyond ruling all the demons in Gehenna, his power continues to influence the world through his sons, Rin and Yukio Okumura.
A key sign of Satan’s power is his inability to fully exist in our world. He needs to inhabit a person or creature to appear, because his raw power would otherwise overwhelm and destroy them. This makes him a threat to existence itself, embodying the entire realm of the underworld and all devils – he’s far more than just a powerful opponent, and easily one of the…
Makima’s Unassuming Charm Makes Her a Terrifying Devil in Chainsaw Man
While many devils are known for their fighting skills, Makima appears calm and collected. However, her ability to control others makes her incredibly powerful, ranking her among the strongest devils in Chainsaw Man. As the Control Devil, she’s one of the Four Horsemen – the most powerful and influential devils in the series – and can manipulate both humans and devils, making her a danger to almost everyone.
Makima skillfully controlled the Japanese government and then extended her influence to manipulate individuals like Aki, Power, and Denji, forcing them to work for her at Public Safety. Every nation except the U.S. realized fighting her masterful control was futile. Her relentless and cruel pursuit of Pochita, achieved by manipulating Denji, makes her a formidable and deeply unlikeable character.
