Breaking Bad’s Most-Hated Character Gets Candid Defense From Bryan Cranston 13 Years Later

Okay, so I just saw this awesome video – Bryan Cranston, who I absolutely loved as Walter White in Breaking Bad, teamed up with Frankie Muniz, you know, Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle! It was really cool to see those two together again, they definitely have some fun chemistry.

Before becoming famous for his role on “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston starred alongside Frankie Muniz in the early 2000s sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle.” Cranston played the humorous father in the family, while Muniz played Malcolm, the intelligent and observant middle child who narrates the show. The series, which ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006, had a total of 151 episodes.

With many classic TV shows getting revived on streaming platforms, Malcolm in the Middle is the latest to make a comeback. Frank Muniz and Bryan Cranston have been talking about the new series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, and recently appeared on the YouTube show Hot Ones Versus. On the show, celebrities interview each other with a catch – if they don’t answer a question, they have to eat a very spicy chicken wing.

During the show, Frankie Muniz got lucky when he drew a card letting him ask Bryan Cranston any question he wanted. Determined to win the Chicken Wing Trophy, Muniz asked a straightforward but risky question: “Which is the better wife, Lois or Skyler?” Lois is the mother from Malcolm in the Middle, while Skyler is Cranston’s wife on Breaking Bad.

Cranston explained his answer was “strictly from a character standpoint, Lois.” Muniz playfully rolled his eyes and admitted it was an easy question because “she loves you.” Then, he surprisingly confessed that despite being a fan of Breaking Bad, he’d wanted to see Skyler eliminated so that your character’s storyline would be simpler. He felt Cranston’s character was such a villain that he could have easily gotten rid of his wife.

Bryan Cranston revealed that Anna Gunn, who played Skyler White, received significant negative reactions from viewers. Many fans blamed Skyler for not supporting Walter White’s actions. Cranston immediately defended Gunn, pointing out the extreme circumstances: she was pregnant, her husband was manufacturing drugs, and people had been harmed – yet she was the one receiving the most criticism. He expressed his confusion over the intense dislike directed towards her.

Although Breaking Bad ended with Walter White’s death, fans still have something to anticipate. Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, is releasing a book about the show called Do What You’re Gonna Do: The Definitive Oral History of Breaking Bad, offering an inside look at its creation.

The book will offer a look behind the scenes, including exclusive interviews with the actors and crew. A major focus will be the making of the fifth season episode “Ozymandias,” widely considered the best in Breaking Bad. This episode features a thrilling but heartbreaking storyline where the character Hank dies. The book’s title comes from Hank’s final words.

Joe Layden’s new book is coming out on November 3, 2026, marking the first release related to Breaking Bad in more than four years. Meanwhile, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair will debut on Hulu and Disney+ on April 10, 2026.
