Darren Aronofsky’s 2014 film, ‘Noah,’ a drama based on the biblical story of Noah’s Ark, is now available to stream on Peacock as of the beginning of April.
The latest additions to the streaming service include the film Noah, which joined titles like Interstellar, the Blade series, and several Transformers movies on April 1st. Noah stars Russell Crowe as the man chosen to build an ark to save his family and all life on Earth from a massive flood. While director Darren Aronofsky’s previous films, such as Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream, were known for their intensity, Noah was a different kind of project – and it proved to be a successful one.
Critics Loved Noah, But It Faced Serious Challenges in Several Countries
Released in March 2014, the movie Noah was well-received by critics and continues to hold a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, over a decade later. Reviewers particularly appreciated its beautiful imagery and compelling acting, noting that it told a grand story in a surprisingly relatable and personal way.
Even so, the film sparked controversy when it first came out. Some critics had problems with its interpretations, and surprisingly, even some Christians found it controversial despite being based on a Bible story. This was mainly because the filmmakers drew inspiration from sources beyond the Bible – specifically, the Book of Enoch – instead of sticking only to the Book of Genesis. Additionally, the film referred to God as ‘the Creator’ rather than using a proper name.
The film was blocked from release in multiple Muslim countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia. China also prevented its release, allegedly due to religious concerns, but the official reason wasn’t made public.
Despite some criticism and debate, the film Noah was a financial success. It earned $359.2 million globally, even without being released in China, and made over $43 million in its opening weekend – a better start than any of its competitors. Noah topped the box office charts and broke several international opening weekend records.
Audiences Slammed Noah for Historical Inaccuracies
Despite receiving positive reviews from critics and doing reasonably well in theaters, the movie Noah didn’t resonate with most viewers. While critics generally liked it – giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating – audiences rated it ‘Rotten,’ with less than half (only 41% of over 100,000 ratings) expressing a positive opinion.
Many viewers criticized the movie Noah for getting historical details wrong, especially the costumes and its departures from the Biblical story. While some called it disrespectful and untrue, others praised its visual beauty and creative interpretation. One reviewer noted that Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly gave beautiful performances, and despite the changes from the Bible, the film still delivered a grand cinematic experience.
Noah is now streaming on Peacock.
