Mark Hamill on Feeling ‘Old’ as Star Wars Marks Major Milestone

Mark Hamill recently shared how he’s feeling his age as the original Star Wars film, A New Hope, celebrates its 50th anniversary. He discussed this while working with LEGO to promote their new LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy toy line.

Mark Hamill celebrates 50th anniversary of the first day of Star Wars’ production

In a recent interview with USA Today, Mark Hamill discussed the 50th anniversary of when Star Wars began production.

The actor said it’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years, and realizing that time has passed made him feel his age. Looking back at his old notes from filming brought back a lot of memories. He added with a smile, “Time really does fly when you’re enjoying yourself!”

Mark Hamill remembered bringing his son, Nathan, to the set of Return of the Jedi when Nathan was very young, and Nathan loved it. Hamill explained that because Nathan was small, he could fit comfortably in places like Yoda’s house and even sit on the Emperor’s throne. The crew let him explore the creature shop and play with props.

The 74-year-old also mentioned that his son, Griffin, doesn’t care for the franchise, finding it too focused on making money. His daughter, Chelsea, however, enjoys them.

Mark Hamill became famous playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies. He was just 25 years old when he started filming the first film. After the initial three Star Wars movies, he continued to voice the character in animated series. He then returned to play Luke Skywalker on screen in the more recent trilogy. More recently, Hamill made appearances in the Disney+ shows The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, where special effects made him look younger to match the story’s timeline.

After five decades playing the famous character, the actor has decided to retire from the franchise. He explained to ComicBook.com that he feels it’s time to let new characters take the lead and that he’s grateful for his time with the role. His final performance as Luke Skywalker was in the animated series Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.

Even though the show finished a few months ago, Mark Hamill is working with LEGO to showcase the new Star Wars toys. These toys will feature LEGO’s SMART Play System, which adds more interactivity to the play experience.
