The creator of The Boys has explained a surprising moment from the latest episode. Eric Kripke, the showrunner, revealed why a superhero didn’t die as many viewers expected.
Erik Kripke on how Soldier Boy survived Butcher’s virus in The Boys
Season 5 of The Boys premiered on Prime Video on April 8, 2026, with the release of its first two episodes. The episode “Teenage Kix” ended with a shocking scene: Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles) appeared to be alive inside a body bag, despite seemingly being killed by Butcher’s virus that targets superpowered individuals.
According to showrunner Eric Kripke, Soldier Boy didn’t die from the exposure. He told TV Insider that the reason Soldier Boy is immune to the virus is key to the season’s main storyline. This development completely changes the game, creating a competition between Homelander and The Boys to find whatever gives him that immunity.
The most likely explanation centers around V1, the first version of Compound V featured in Season 2 of Gen V. Scientist Thomas Godolkin injected himself with V1 in 1967, and he discovered that unlike regular Compound V, which gives people powers and makes them tougher, V1 essentially makes someone immortal. Soldier Boy, created during World War II with an early version of the formula, might still have V1 in his system, protecting him from the effects of Butcher’s current version of Compound V.
As a huge cinema fan, the deaths of Rock Hard and Jetstreak really got me thinking. They both succumbed to the same virus, trapped in that sealed room, but Soldier Boy walked away unscathed. It really struck me that this isn’t just luck; it points to him being built differently, like his body just naturally fights off whatever that stuff was. It implies a completely unique biology that protects him.
Kripke explained to TV Insider that this plotline will be central to the season. He stated that if Homelander gets his hands on it, everything is lost. However, if The Boys succeed, there’s still hope for the people they care about.
Season 5 of The Boys will continue streaming on Prime Video every Wednesday, with the final episode airing on May 20, 2026.
