Okay, so in the newest episode of Invincible, it was really nice to see Oliver and Nolan actually spending some time together, you know, bonding. It happened while Mark was still recovering from that brutal rematch with Conquest. But, honestly, while they were talking, Oliver let something slip that definitely gave me pause. It felt…off, and left me wondering what’s really going on.
Nolan didn’t feel like Earth was truly home, and he told his father so, saying, “I don’t know if I’d call Earth home.” He explained that he always felt like an outsider, even compared to his friend Mark. Oliver remembered making friends when he was younger during Season 3, but because he developed so quickly due to his unique biology, those friendships didn’t last, which was a strange experience for both him and his friends.
Oliver’s lack of concern for Earth and its people is worrying, as it suggests a major struggle is coming, one that will decide the future of humanity.
Mark and Oliver Fight Over the Fate of Earth
As a comic book fan, I always found it fascinating how, after their home planet was destroyed, the Viltrumites basically came to Earth as refugees. They weren’t looking to conquer right away – they needed to rebuild their population, and they saw Earth as the perfect place to do it. It put Nolan and Mark in a really tough spot, because letting them stay meant risking the same kind of devastation they brought to Viltrum. Reluctantly, they decided to avoid a fight and let them settle, hoping to prevent another planetary catastrophe.
When Allen became the new leader of the Coalition of Planets following Thaedus’s death, he decided the best way to eliminate the Viltrumites was to release the Scoruge Virus on Earth. Nolan disagreed, worried the virus would also kill humans because of their genetic similarities to the Viltrumites.

Unfortunately for Nolan, Oliver sided with Allen’s choice, believing Earth could be sacrificed. This was especially true considering Oliver’s generally negative view of people – in the comics, he often referred to everyone as unpleasant, except for Debbie.
Mark encountered them in space, but when he discovered their scheme, he vowed to stop them, even if it meant battling both of them. He bluntly told Oliver that he’d always seemed indifferent to human life.

Following an unexpected assist from Thragg, Mark and the regent managed to convince Allen not to unleash the virus. However, the Guardians of the Globe interrupted, causing a massive brawl. Amidst the fighting, Oliver grabbed the virus from Allen while his brother pursued him.
Mark and Oliver clashed while fighting over the virus. Although Mark was still more powerful, Oliver accidentally exposed him to the Scourge Virus during the struggle. This incident will ultimately uncover surprising truths about their families.
A More Apathetic Than Psychopathic Oliver
Considering how Oliver has been portrayed in the show so far, some comic book fans wondered if he would really make such a cruel choice. To be blunt, Oliver has often acted with a ruthlessness that’s much stronger than how he’s depicted in the comics.

Besides killing the Mauler twins, Oliver has generally been calmer and more likable than his comic book version, even managing to make friends as a child. It will be fascinating to see how the show handles this change in him, and explains why he’d suddenly consider killing everyone on Earth after Mark and Debbie emphasized the importance of life.
The series could explore Oliver becoming indifferent to humanity, instead of actively hating them. He might even reinterpret the values Mark and Debbie tried to teach him, justifying his actions by focusing on the grand scale of things – like preventing the potential destruction of the Viltrumite Empire across the universe.
