The latest version has faced some backlash due to the initial remake, comments made by J.K. Rowling, and the decision to change the race of the character Severus Snape. Despite this, HBO is committed to creating an adaptation that stays closer to the original source material.
I was so surprised and excited when HBO dropped that behind-the-scenes special eight months before the first season even aired! It was a real treat for fans like me, giving us a peek into the making of this magical world with interviews from the cast and crew. And someone on Reddit spotted what looks like our first good look at Professor Quirrell – thankfully, it seems they’re staying true to the character as we know him from the books!
The Harry Potter Films Changed a Detail About Professor Quirrell
As many dedicated readers are aware, Professor Quirrell secretly carries Lord Voldemort on the back of his head. But this wasn’t revealed right away. When Harry first encountered Quirrell at The Leaky Cauldron, the book didn’t mention him wearing a large turban – that detail came later.
The show appears to be staying true to the source material, and recent images suggest Luke Thallon will be playing Professor Quirrell – a first for television. While HBO hasn’t confirmed this casting, the evidence strongly suggests it’s true, and represents a significant departure from the original films.
As a fan, I’ve always noticed a difference between the book and the movie when Harry first meets Quirrell. In the books, Quirrell seems normal – he looks like himself and even shakes Harry’s hand. It wasn’t until later we find out Voldemort was already attached to the back of his head! But in the first movie, Ian Hart, who played Quirrell, already had his turban on when they met at The Leaky Cauldron, and he wouldn’t even shake Harry’s hand. It’s a small detail, but it really changes how you see that first interaction!
In the book, Quirrell initially touches Harry’s hand without wearing a turban. Later, during the Sorting Ceremony, Harry notices Professor Quirrell, whom he remembers as the anxious man from the Leaky Cauldron, now sporting a large, unusual purple turban.
Instead of showing the actor without his turban between filming scenes, the new Harry Potter series will probably avoid having him wear one during the initial introduction of his character.
The Harry Potter Special Confirmed Season 1’s Episode Count
Filming for the first season, officially named Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, began in July 2025. Production is still underway and is expected to finish around May.
The show’s creators announced that the first season will have eight episodes. Although it’s longer than the two-and-a-half-hour movie version, it still feels like a good length, because the season is primarily focused on establishing the new setting and characters for viewers.
A television series will allow the story to develop more fully, and fans are hoping for both a true-to-the-source adaptation and a richer, expanded world – something difficult to achieve in just eight episodes. Fortunately, the show isn’t due out for another six months, leaving room for potential surprises.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on Christmas on HBO Max.
