8 Thriller Shows That Will Get You Hooked in the First 10 Minutes

It’s common for friends to recommend TV shows that start slow, promising they improve later. While you might be willing to wait for a comedy or drama to find its footing, thrillers need to grab your attention immediately. A good thriller establishes a compelling main character and a clear sense of danger or conflict from the beginning, and you should quickly understand the show’s overall mood.

Many TV thrillers grab your attention immediately with opening scenes that introduce the main characters and storyline in a way that makes you want to binge-watch the whole series. There’s almost nothing more satisfying than stumbling upon a new show you instantly love!

‘The Better Sister’ (2025)

The Prime Video thriller The Better Sister, released in May 2025, didn’t receive the recognition it deserved, but its opening scene is incredibly compelling. It immediately throws you into a mystery: Chloe Banks (played by Jessica Biel) returns home from a lavish party to discover her husband, Adam (Corey Stoll), has been murdered. This shocking discovery instantly makes you want to find out who is responsible and what their motive was.

“The Better Sister” is a captivating story centered around the complex relationship between Chloe and her sister, Nicky Macintosh (Elizabeth Banks). While the mystery of Adam’s death will initially grab your attention, the real heart of the story lies in understanding why Chloe and Nicky struggle to connect, and discovering what they have in common despite their differences.

‘Wayward’ (2025)

The first scene of Wayward immediately establishes a dark and emotionally charged story centered around a boarding school filled with secrets, and the close bond between two intelligent, rule-breaking friends. Mae Martin is the creative force behind the series; she wrote the first and last episodes and also stars as Alex, a new arrival in the town where Tall Pines Academy is located. The story begins in 2003 with a student running away from Tall Pines, accompanied by the unsettling voice of the school’s owner, Evelyn Wade (Toni Collette), performing a mysterious ritual that will be explained later.

You’re lying on your back, calling for your mother, but she’s standing with her back turned, facing away from you.

The series immediately draws you in with a sense of mystery, making you wonder about the fate of a student who disappears underwater and the reasons behind his actions. We then meet Abbie and Leila, two captivating outsiders who find solace in their friendship. When Leila is encouraged to attend Tall Pines by her counselor, Wyatt Turner, it echoes the unsettling opening scene, hinting that this place holds danger. Throughout the remaining seven episodes, the show reveals the answers to these questions, crafting a touching story about finding where you belong and growing up.

‘We Were Liars’ (2025)

If you’ve heard friends or family talk about the Prime Video thriller We Were Liars – based on the popular young adult novel by E. Lockhart – they probably discussed the shocking twist at the end of the first season. The show quickly grabs your attention, and you’ll be hooked until the very last moment.

Instead of starting the story with Cady Sinclair (Emily Alyn Lind) in the present, the series begins with a shocking and crucial scene: Cady is found on a beach, seemingly near death. She then shares what happened.

“Something terrible happened last summer. I have no memory of what or who hurt me.”

Following a brief mention of a difficult past, the story flashes back to show a seemingly cheerful teenager caught up in a dysfunctional, wealthy family. Though tales of cruel, rich families are common, We Were Liars stands out as both engaging and insightful.

‘Black Rabbit’ (2025)

Jude Law delivers a captivating performance in the Netflix thriller Black Rabbit, alongside Jason Bateman. The series immediately grabs your attention with a thrilling and quick opening ten minutes. We first see Jake Friedken (played by Law) walking through a bustling restaurant kitchen before he addresses a large audience, beginning with the statement:

Black Rabbit was designed for nights just like this. We didn’t want to simply open a restaurant; we envisioned a gathering place – a home for our community, our loved ones, and anyone looking for a memorable night where anything could happen. That’s what we hoped to create.

Although the beginning might not immediately grab you, things quickly pick up. The story takes a dark turn when masked robbers enter a restaurant, signaling this is no ordinary drama. Bateman delivers a strong performance as Jake’s brother, Vince. Overall, Black Rabbit is a gritty story exploring themes of family, crime, ambition, money, and addiction.

‘The Hunting Wives’ (2025-)

If you haven’t started watching the Netflix thriller The Hunting Wives yet, you’ve probably heard it’s full of twists and turns—and the first few minutes don’t disappoint. The story begins with a girl running through the woods as gunshots ring out, then introduces Sophie O’Neil (Brittany Snow), who has just moved to Maple Brook, Texas, with her son and husband, Graham (Evan Jonigkeit). After a party at the home of Margo Banks (Malin Akerman), Sophie and Margo share a revealing conversation in the bathroom.

The very first scene of this show raises so many intriguing questions—who are the people in the forest, who was pursuing them, and what secrets are Sophie and Margo hiding?—that it immediately makes you want to binge-watch the whole season. The Hunting Wives was a success, and it’s easy to get completely hooked. Thankfully, Netflix has renewed it for a second season, and fans are hoping it lives up to the quality of the first.

‘His and Hers’ (2026)

You can easily watch all six episodes of the Netflix miniseries His & Hers in a single weekend, or even an evening. The show centers on Jack (Jon Bernthal) and Anna (Tessa Thompson), a divorced couple, as they both try to solve the mystery of a woman’s death in their hometown of Dahlonega, Georgia. The series starts with a striking image – a dead body on a car – before the opening credits, immediately grabbing your attention.

Okay, so after all that, Anna rushes home looking really stressed, which immediately made me wonder if she was involved in the murder. We then get a glimpse into her life, and Jack’s too – we see him being a really happy dad, then heading to the crime scene with his partner. Meanwhile, Anna’s trying to get her old job back at the TV station. Honestly, the mystery of who did it is important, but I found myself way more invested in the complicated connection between Jack and Anna. Their dynamic is what really grabbed my attention.

‘Scarpetta’ (2026-)

Similar to the series His & Hers, Scarpetta opens with a shocking scene: a body discovered near some train tracks. The Prime Video thriller then explores the life of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, weaving between her current investigations and her past experiences. We see Kay (played by Nicole Kidman) receive a call about a new murder in the present, and in flashbacks (with Rosy McEwan as the younger Kay), we see her working on a case while battling personal demons. Once the connection between these cases becomes clear, viewers – just like readers of Patricia Cornwell’s books – will find themselves completely engrossed.

The start of Scarpetta Season 2 is captivating, and hopefully the rest of the season will be just as impactful. Unlike many thrillers that begin with a murder, Scarpetta focuses on its unique lead character. The show also thoughtfully examines how Kay’s demanding career has shaped her personality, which is a compelling aspect of the story.

‘Cross’ (2024-)

The story begins with Alex Cross, played by Aldis Hodge, enjoying dinner with his wife, Maria (Chaunteé Schuler Irving), and friends. Suddenly, gunshots ring out, and in a shocking moment, Alex finds himself looking at Maria’s lifeless body. This Prime Video thriller immediately plunges the audience into a devastating loss and sets the stage for his journey.

It’s hard to imagine anyone not being captivated by such a shocking moment. Viewers are naturally driven to find out who was responsible for his wife’s death, the motive behind it, and how it’s changed Cross. This single scene powerfully establishes the core of the series—a thrilling exploration of love, betrayal, money, family, and friendship—which has continued for two seasons and will likely be revisited with new antagonists in Season 3.
