We’re seeing more and more team-ups between heroes from different worlds, but horror comics rarely cross over with each other. That’s about to change, as one series is joining the universe of a very popular horror title.
A new miniseries within the world of Boom! Studios’ Something is Killing the Children will introduce a unique hero: a mutant who is part human and part plant.
The title, while clever, initially implies that Swamp Thing (actually Alec Holland) is behaving unusually by harming a child. However, writer James Tynion IV clarified at C2E2 2026 that the story’s villain isn’t the true Swamp Thing.
The story centers around two brothers within the world of ‘Something is Killing the Children.’ The older brother is a horror comic fan with a large Swamp Thing poster, while the younger brother prefers superhero comics but is scared of his brother’s scary comics. This fear takes a recognizable form, and that’s when Erica Slaughter appears.
Erica Slaughter is the main character in Something is Killing the Children, and the story’s broader universe is often called the “Slaughterverse” because of her. Created by Tynion and artist Werther Dell’Edera, Erica was recruited by a group of monster hunters when she was twelve, and she trained with them to become a protector of children from dangerous creatures from other worlds.
Erica’s next big challenge seems to be a monster born from a young boy’s fear, and it looks a lot like one of his nightmares. However, the writer, Tynion, hints that the real danger in Swamp Thing is Killing the Children is much deeper than it appears.
There’s actually a lot more hidden meaning and connection happening than you might think,” Tynion explained. “I can also tell you that the core of who Alec Holland really is will show up in this story. It’ll be a self-contained issue that I hope everyone enjoys, as it’s a very meaningful story to me.
It looks like the Slaughterverse event is developing into a full-fledged DC crossover, going beyond its initial premise. The intriguing concept alone should grab the attention of fans familiar with Swamp Thing, the unusual superhero first created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson in a 1971 issue of House of Secrets, and later fully realized.
The Something Is Killing The Children Universe Expands Further In 2026
Besides the new Swamp Thing is Killing the Children series, there’s more content on the way for fans of Something is Killing the Children.
A new book titled Fall of the House of Slaughter will be released on May 6th. It’s a spin-off story that centers on Cecilia Slaughter, a monster hunter searching for someone to take over leadership of the organization from its current, failing leader, the Old Dragon.
Tate Brombal, the writer behind the series that ran from 2021 to 2025, is now leading this new project. He’s working with artist Adriano Turtulici, known for his work on You’ll Do Bad Things. Brombal is also the creator of other popular titles like the one-shot stories Book of Slaughter, Book of Butcher, and Book of Cutter.
James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s comic book series, Something is Killing the Children, originally launched in 2019, and efforts to adapt it into other media began shortly after. In 2021, Netflix announced a TV series executive produced by Mike Flanagan. However, in late 2024, Netflix let the rights go, and Blumhouse quickly stepped in, securing the rights to the entire ‘Slaughterverse’ with plans to create a live-action movie and an accompanying animated series.
Swamp Thing is Killing the Children does not have a release date at the moment.
