Every year brings us fantastic movies that many people enjoy. Fifteen years ago, popular films included titles like Moneyball, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, X-Men: First Class, and Super 8, among others.
2011 had a lot of excellent films, but some really good ones didn’t get much attention. These movies were either small independent releases, went straight to home video, or simply weren’t fully appreciated when they first came out – but they’re all worth watching.
Violet & Daisy
Despite having a talented cast and an appealing idea, the movie Violet & Daisy didn’t attract much of an audience. Critics weren’t impressed either, giving it a low score of just 23% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie centers around two teenage assassins, brilliantly portrayed by Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan. They take on what seems like a simple job, but the target unexpectedly throws them a curveball.
Alexis Bledel and Fionn Whitehead have fantastic chemistry, and the film boasts a strong supporting cast including James Gandolfini, Tatiana Maslany, and Danny Trejo. While it doesn’t break any new ground, it’s an enjoyable movie with excellent performances.
Batman: Year One
Animated movies are often overlooked by audiences, particularly superhero animations and those released directly on DVD or Blu-Ray.
I recently revisited Batman: Year One, and it’s still fantastic. It really gets into the beginnings of both Batman and Jim Gordon – showing us Bruce Wayne’s first year as the Dark Knight and Gordon’s arrival in Gotham. It’s adapted from the graphic novel, and it does a brilliant job of portraying those early, formative days for both characters.
The comic book received excellent reviews, and the movie Batman: Year One is consistently ranked among the best Batman films on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 88% approval rating. It’s praised for its compelling story and strong voice performances.
My Week With Marilyn
Most movies nominated for an Academy Award aren’t exactly ‘hidden gems,’ but My Week with Marilyn is a delightful exception. It’s a stronger film than the more recent Blonde, but somehow didn’t receive the same level of attention.
As a total film buff, I recently checked out My Week with Marilyn, and it’s fascinating! It’s based on some behind-the-scenes accounts of how Marilyn Monroe made The Prince and the Showgirl back in 1957. The movie basically shows you what it was like on set for a week, following Marilyn, Laurence Olivier, and the rest of the crew as they filmed.
Michelle Williams gives a standout performance as Marilyn Monroe, widely considered one of her best and earning her an Academy Award nomination. The film also features strong supporting performances from Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, and Emma Watson.
Goon
Recently, the hockey movie Goon hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. There aren’t many good hockey films made, so it’s a shame that Goon was largely overlooked.
I recently saw Goon, and it’s a really fun movie! It’s actually based on a true story – it follows Doug Glatt, this incredibly likable but not exactly brilliant guy who works as a bouncer and just loves to fight. He ends up using that skill on the hockey rink, and the movie’s a surprisingly heartwarming story about him and his team finding their way.
Seann William Scott shines as the character Doug, and Liev Schreiber plays a famous fighter he’s pitted against. The movie also features strong performances from Allison Pill, Eugene Levy, and Jay Baruchel.
Our Idiot Brother
While it’s not a hugely famous comedy, Our Idiot Brother boasts an incredibly talented cast. You’d be hard-pressed to find a movie with a better ensemble – featuring Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, Elizabeth Banks, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Coogan, Emily Mortimer, and Adam Scott, all delivering great performances.
The movie Our Idiot Brother follows Ned, played by Paul Rudd, a kind-hearted but somewhat lost man who keeps unintentionally causing problems for his three sisters, portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, and Emily Mortimer.
This movie is well-written and features strong acting, with a genuinely heartwarming story. It’s one of those hidden gems you discover and immediately question why it didn’t get more attention.
You’re Next
What makes You’re Next stand out is how it breaks from typical slasher movie formulas. For years, these films have followed a pattern: a killer stalks victims, and a lone survivor manages to stop them.
But You’re Next takes a unique approach, and it really works. When a family is attacked by a group of killers while staying at a secluded cabin, they get a surprise: one of them, Erin, was actually trained to survive in a survivalist camp.
This equips Erin with the ability to avenge her attackers. We see her relentlessly pursue and defeat them, establishing her as a potentially iconic “final girl,” even if she’s not widely recognized.
10 Years
Like Our Idiot Brother, 10 Years boasts a fantastic cast. Many of the actors were already well-known when the movie came out, and even more have become famous in the fifteen years since.
Let me tell you, the cast list for this movie is seriously impressive! You’ve got Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson, Oscar Isaac, and a whole bunch of other familiar faces like Jenna Dewan, Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie, Chris Pratt, Ari Graynor, Justin Long, and Kate Mara. The story centers around a high school reunion, so it’s all about reconnecting with old friends – and all the drama that comes with it!
The film weaves together numerous storylines, making almost every scene engaging. Despite positive reviews, it earned less than $1 million during its brief time in theaters.
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Elizabeth Olsen is now a well-known actress. She’s given fantastic performances in roles like Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as in the movie Eternity and the miniseries Love & Death, among other projects.
Before becoming a household name, Elizabeth Olsen first gained attention for her performance in the film Martha Marcy May Marlene. When the movie came out, many viewers didn’t even realize she had a famous sister and brother.
Elizabeth Olsen gives a powerful performance as the main character, a woman rebuilding her life with her family after escaping a years-long experience in a deeply damaging and abusive cult. She grapples with the trauma of her past as she attempts to adjust to everyday life.
Attack The Block
Before becoming famous as Finn in the recent Star Wars films, John Boyega showed his acting skills in Attack the Block. In that movie, he plays Moses, a teenager involved in a small-time street gang.
One evening, he and his friends find themselves defending their neighborhood from an alien attack. John Boyega stars alongside Jodie Whittaker, who is poised to become a well-known actress, as the most prominent faces in the movie.
Despite being made on a relatively low budget, the movie features impressive alien designs. The visual effects are surprisingly good, and they complement a well-written story, making it seem like a much more expensive production.
Pariah
It’s surprising how few people discuss the film Pariah, which is truly excellent and meaningful. The movie centers on Alike, a Black teenager who struggles to balance different parts of herself and meet the expectations of those around her.
She’s looking for understanding and support as she comes to terms with being a lesbian. The film Pariah received a lot of positive attention, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning several awards within the independent film community.
As a film lover, I was thrilled to hear that Pariah not only took home the Excellence in Cinematography Award at Sundance, but it’s also been chosen for preservation by the United States National Film Registry! That’s a huge deal – it’s one of just five films from 2011 onward to get that recognition, which really speaks to its lasting impact.
