Godzilla has consistently demonstrated why he deserves the title of King of the Monsters in Legendary’s Monsterverse. While Kong has achieved impressive victories – defeating opponents like Mechagodzilla, the Skar King, and the massive Skullcrawler in Kong: Skull Island – he still doesn’t quite measure up to Godzilla. Godzilla’s position as the most powerful Titan in the Monsterverse remains unchallenged.
Before the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, the two monsters only fought each other once on film, in the classic 1961 movie King Kong vs. Godzilla. While Godzilla dominated most of the fight, Kong was declared the winner because he was the only one to surface after both titans fell into the water during the finale. This ending has always been controversial, with many fans believing Kong didn’t truly deserve the win, especially considering his usual size disadvantage compared to Godzilla.
The Monsterverse movies handle the battles between Godzilla and Kong in a unique way. Before ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ came out, fans argued about who would win. Ultimately, Godzilla was the clear victor, and his win wasn’t just a narrow one – it was a complete triumph.
Kong has definitely had some good moments in the Monsterverse, but the films consistently show that he isn’t strong enough to surpass Godzilla as the ultimate monster.
Godzilla Was Declared The Only Titan Who Could Beat Ghidorah
Before Godzilla and Kong even fought in the Monsterverse movies, there were hints that Kong wasn’t expected to win. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a character asks if any Titan could beat King Ghidorah. The scientist Dr. Serizawa replies, “only one,” clearly meaning Godzilla. It’s interesting that Kong isn’t mentioned at all, since the film acknowledges his existence and the organization Monarch knows about him.
Monarch first discovered Kong in the 1970s and established a base on Skull Island to monitor him ever since. Because of this long observation, they have a detailed understanding of Kong’s strength and abilities. If Kong were powerful enough to fight Ghidorah, it seems likely that one of the scientists would have suggested he try.
Looking back, Monarch was correct about Godzilla and Ghidorah. While Kong is strong, Ghidorah’s gravity beams and multiple heads make him an incredibly dangerous opponent – possibly even too much for Kong. Ghidorah pushed Godzilla to the limit more than Kong ever has, and is likely a more powerful monster overall within the Monsterverse.
Godzilla Could Have Killed Kong In The First Minute Of Their Fight
The movie Godzilla vs. Kong quickly established Godzilla as the stronger fighter. Their first battle, over an aircraft carrier at sea, clearly showed Godzilla easily overpowering Kong. Humans had to intervene to save Kong, and they came up with a plan to trick Godzilla into thinking Kong was defeated.
Godzilla clearly won the fight, but it’s important to remember he had a significant advantage. The battle largely took place in the water, which is where Godzilla is most comfortable and powerful. Even before they entered the water, Godzilla landed a powerful blow to Kong’s jaw and quickly retaliated. Although Kong managed to briefly stagger Godzilla, Godzilla’s counterattack immediately put Kong on the defensive.
And had the humans not intervened, Godzilla would have finished off Kong with his atomic breath.
Despite Many Disadvantages, Godzilla Defeats Kong In The Rematch
The rematch took place under very different conditions. Fighting in a city allowed Kong to use his speed and agility to avoid Godzilla’s atomic breath. While Kong was probably also exhausted, Godzilla had just used a massive amount of energy to break through to the Hollow Earth. Crucially, Kong was now armed with an axe capable of absorbing Godzilla’s atomic breath.
Kong fought much better this time, managing to injure Godzilla with his axe and get in several good hits. However, he couldn’t keep up the attack, and the fight ended with Godzilla standing over a defeated Kong, roaring to prove he was the clear winner.
Godzilla Beats Kong Again In Egypt
In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong had another chance to beat Godzilla during their battle in Egypt. Just like in Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong needed a weapon to have a fair fight. This time, it was a powerful glove called the BEAST Glove, which allowed Kong to knock Godzilla unconscious, though only for a moment. Godzilla quickly recovered, and the fight continued.
Kong tried to fight back, but Godzilla’s constant attacks were too much. Godzilla’s incredible strength proved to be more powerful than Kong’s speed and cleverness. Godzilla finally overpowered Kong, almost defeating him completely. Luckily, Mothra intervened and convinced them to stop. This was the second time someone had to step in to prevent Godzilla from killing Kong.
Kong Almost Loses To Titan X
Although Godzilla and Kong haven’t actually fought each other in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series, the show continues to demonstrate Godzilla’s greater strength. Both titans battled Titan X, a huge, water-based creature resembling Biollante. While Titan X put up a good fight against Godzilla, it never felt like a serious threat to him.
Titan X appeared to survive the encounter without serious injury. The humans realized Godzilla hadn’t tried to kill her, but instead seemed to have been focused on forcing her to leave the area.
The fight between Kong and Titan X felt more important than previous battles. Kong struggled badly against Titan X, but seeing his egg gave him renewed strength. It’s worth noting that the villain, Isabel Simmons, was manipulating Titan X with technology, making the fight even harder for Kong.
Despite any strengths the Titan X possessed, the fight’s location evened the playing field. The battle happened on land, which favored Kong, as it was his natural habitat. Titan X nearly won while being disadvantaged, but that would have been impossible against Godzilla.
