The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has opened the door for many of Nintendo’s beloved stories to be adapted for film. Although the movie doesn’t hint at a specific plot for a sequel, there’s a wealth of source material that could easily launch a new adventure for Mario and Luigi, or even introduce a different hero.
It’s definitely possible we’ll see more movies based on Nintendo games. While Super Mario is their most popular franchise, other characters could also lead their own films. In fact, rumors suggest Donkey Kong, who appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, might be getting a standalone movie soon.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could explore a character’s journey in a way we’ve seen before. At the same time, the film will probably continue Mario’s overall story, letting him and his friends have new adventures inspired by both older and newer Super Mario games.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s end-credits scene, along with a subtle clue from Princess Rosalina and other elements within the film, have cleverly set up plenty of potential stories for future movies.
5. Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars
A fascinating choice in The Super Mario Bros. Movie involves Bowser’s character. Early on, his attempts to befriend Mario are presented as comical, but after a crash landing, the film reveals that Bowser was sincere all along.
Even Bowser got a chance to be the good guy for a bit, though his son, Bowser Jr., quickly reversed that. The recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie showed that Bowser isn’t entirely bad, though. This makes it believable that he could stop being a villain again, potentially leading to a team-up with Mario like the one fans loved in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
The game Super Mario RPG brings together Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser, and two new characters to fight the Smithy Gang and prevent them from taking over the world. Considering this, the plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which involves mysterious enemies pursuing Peach and Daisy, feels connected to the game. It’s likely this detail was intended to hint at the Smithy Gang as the villains.
4. Super Mario Land
Princess Daisy’s brief appearance at the end of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might be a hint of things to come. Her first major role in a video game was in Super Mario Land, where Mario travels through the kingdom of Sarasaland.
In Super Mario Land, Mario travels across the four kingdoms of Sarasaland to rescue Princess Daisy from the villain, Tatanga. Considering Daisy went to the Gateway Galaxy looking for help, the next movie might involve Mario and Luigi saving Sarasaland.
Including elements from Super Mario Land would be a simple way to introduce Wario to the movies – he’s become one of the most requested characters. In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario actually takes over Mario’s house while Mario is away.
A movie adaptation could successfully blend these two storylines, naturally featuring both Princess Daisy and Wario as main characters.
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
Following the fight with Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario and his friends faced both Bowser and his son. If the series continues, a third movie would likely need a new angle for the Mario versus Bowser conflict. The filmmakers might draw inspiration from Super Mario Bros. 3, which introduced the Koopalings, to achieve this.
The Koopalings – Iggy, Ludwig, Lemmy, Morton, Roy, Wendy, and Larry – are Bowser’s main helpers and often act as mini-bosses Mario needs to defeat before facing Bowser himself. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, where each Koopaling controlled a different kingdom.
The Koopalings stole the magic wands of each kingdom’s king, turning them into animals. This forced Mario to travel to every kingdom and defeat the Koopaling who had taken over, changing them back into their rightful ruler. Once he’d defeated all seven Koopalings, Mario and Luigi faced their leader – Bowser.
A follow-up movie could explore Bowser Jr. seeking allies to overcome Mario and his friends. This would fit well with the style of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which had its characters separated for parts of the story. The heroes could divide into smaller teams to defeat each of the Koopalings one by one.
2. Star Fox
Many viewers loved Glenn Powell’s portrayal of Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, leading to speculation that Nintendo might consider making a standalone Star Fox film. The movie already showed potential for this, as Fox’s scene included his teammates Slippy Toad, Falco Lombardi, and Peppy Hare.
The recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t show everything about Fox McCloud’s backstory, leaving the door open for a Star Fox movie to begin with his original conflict against Andross from the 1993 game. A Star Fox film would broaden Nintendo’s cinematic universe and move things closer to the possibility of a Super Smash Bros. crossover event on the big screen.
1. Luigi’s Mansion
The recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie subtly laid the groundwork for a story based on Luigi’s Mansion. In that game, Luigi explores a haunted house filled with ghosts and ruled by King Boo. He uses a special, powerful vacuum cleaner called the Poltergust 3000 to defeat them.
Luigi receives the Poltergust 3000 from Professor E. Gadd, who is now a key scientist in the Mario universe. This inventive professor has created many important items for the Super Mario games, such as the Magic Paintbrush used by Bowser Jr. in Super Mario Sunshine.
Interestingly, Bowser Jr. doesn’t just have the Magic Paintbrush – the movie also reveals he possesses F.L.U.D.D. and the Poltergust 3000. A coffee cup with the E. Gadd Science logo nearby suggests that he stole all of these inventions from E. Gadd.
The appearance of Professor E. Gadd in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has fans excited about the possibility of a future Luigi’s Mansion movie or show. Professor Gadd is a key character in all three Luigi’s Mansion games, creating all of Luigi’s ghost-hunting equipment. Because he’s so important to Luigi’s adventures, many believe he would be essential to any adaptation of the Luigi’s Mansion story.
There’s a natural way to connect the Super Mario world with Luigi’s Mansion. If Mario and Luigi get Professor E. Gadd’s inventions after defeating Bowser and Bowser Jr., they’d likely return them to him. This could then set up a new Luigi’s Mansion story.
