Be warned: the following contains spoilers for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. One scene early in the film is already being called a potential highlight of all musical movies in 2026. The Bone Temple continues the story of 28 Years Later, but it’s a more unusual, over-the-top, and frightening sequel that puts Dr. Ian Kelson at the center of the action.
This storyline involves a confrontation with Sir Jimmy Crystal, which significantly impacts the climax of The Bone Temple and reinforces the story’s core themes and moral message. It also leads to Kelson’s memorable musical performance – a visually stunning and enjoyable scene that further enhances the story’s meaning.
Kelson’s Metal Performance Is A Hell Of A Show
Ian Kelson’s performance of Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast” is incredibly over-the-top and intentionally ridiculous – a truly captivating spectacle. It’s a strange and visually striking moment, and a clever piece of filmmaking by Nia DaCosta. Kelson’s acting serves
To try and get Jimmy Crystal’s followers to abandon him, Kelson is made to act like Jimmy’s alter ego, Old Nick. This involves playing Jimmy’s music and putting on a pyrotechnics show – a dazzling display that feels more like a music video rave than a genuine attempt to calm down a devoted group.
DaCosta and her team created a fantastic sequence where Ralph Fiennes truly shines as Kelson, singing, dancing, and using impressive visual effects with fire. The scene is fast-paced and energetic, but remains surprisingly controlled, embracing a playful, chaotic energy and a sense of fun at its own silliness.
The performance is outstanding, seamlessly blending music and visuals to create something truly special. The audience at the screening erupted in applause by the end. It features a high-energy, vibrant rhythm, beautifully filmed and delivered with incredible passion. Even just watching it, it’s a fantastic experience.
How The Bone Temple’s Musical Climax Reflects The True Themes Of The Film
I recently watched The Bone Temple, and while the story itself isn’t super complex – it mostly takes place at Sir Jimmy’s old pool, Cathy’s farm, and this really unsettling place Kelson built to honor the dead – what really stuck with me was Kelson’s journey. It felt like the whole film was about him trying to hold onto his own humanity, even in the face of everything happening around him.
Kelson tells Sir Jimmy that he remembers details about the world before it was lost, but struggles to imagine how vast that world once was after the Rage Virus outbreak. He preserves these fragments of the past by collecting photos, books, and especially music.
Kelson’s singing reveals his true nature: a deep appreciation for the creations of others, which he cherishes by remembering them. This is much like his Bone Temples, built to honor those who came before. Because of this connection, his singing becomes especially meaningful when he tries to connect with Samson.
Music is central to Kelson’s identity, so it’s perfect that his last major undertaking involves giving the performance of his life. His energetic and visually striking rendition of “The Number of the Beast” is both a tribute to musical legends and a truly captivating show.
This scene really captures everything about Kelson – his fondness for the way things used to be, his discomfort with the present, and ultimately, his bravery. He makes a deliberate choice to provoke Jimmy, all in an effort to protect Spike. It’s a fitting end to Kelson’s character arc, bringing together his earlier moments, like his singing, and highlighting his strong sense of right and wrong.
While 28 Years Later was a deliberately paced film focusing on themes of loss and survival, The Bone Temple delves deeper into what it means to be human. It portrays both the terrible things people are capable of and the beauty of our art, science, and compassion. Throughout 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, this focus on humanity remains central, particularly through its impactful use of music.
