The new Netflix movie, Remarkably Bright Creatures, is gaining a lot of attention, and people are now looking for books with a similar heartwarming feel. The film features a talented cast and tells a cozy, yet surprising, story set in the charming town of Sowell Bay, Washington.
After finishing Remarkably Bright Creatures, many readers wished the story hadn’t ended. While the book provided a satisfying conclusion and hinted at a positive future for its characters, it left people wanting to stay in that world. Luckily, there are other books with similar heartwarming stories, characters, and atmospheres to enjoy.
What makes Remarkably Bright Creatures work so well is its overall feel. Though some elements might seem like they belong in a typical Hallmark movie, the film stands out thanks to its well-developed characters and a story that makes you think. If you enjoy this film, it’s worth exploring similar stories.
While the movie adaptation of Remarkably Bright Creatures makes a few changes to the book, it successfully captures the same heartwarming feeling and atmosphere as Shelby Van Pelt’s 2022 novel. The characters of Tova, Cameron, and Marcellus all feel authentic and believable, which makes the story very engaging. That said, this story shares similarities with many other wonderful novels.
Project Hail Mary
Okay, so as a huge movie and book fan, I gotta say Project Hail Mary is a real winner – it totally delivers both on the screen and on the page. What I loved most was the connection between the characters, Rocky and Grace. It reminded me a lot of the surprisingly sweet bond between Tova and Cameron; they seem totally different at first, but they really connect over a shared purpose.
Beyond the overall story, the characters share interesting parallels. Rocky, much like Marcellus, isn’t a human being. Learning about his perspective as an alien from the planet Erid, and watching how he interacts with Grace, is a big part of what makes Project Hail Mary so enjoyable.
Both Project Hail Mary and many other equally powerful novels deserve recognition. While Project Hail Mary was a huge success, there are other books that are just as meaningful but aren’t getting as much attention right now.
A Man Called Ove
Fredrik Backman’s novel, A Man Called Ove, is similar to Remarkably Bright Creatures in that it centers around a grumpy old man who rediscovers happiness by connecting with the people around him.
Ove and Tova are both complex characters, though Ove presents as more outwardly challenging. They share a common struggle with connecting to others and are both grappling with the pain of loss as they get older. Through their perspectives, we witness a rewarding journey of personal change for each of them.
Similar to Creatures, Ove has also been made into a movie. It was first adapted in Sweden in 2015, and then again in 2022 as A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks. Both film versions are well-done and worth watching after you’ve read the book.
The Flatshare
Beth O’Leary’s novel, The Flatshare, is a charming and cleverly structured romance. The story unfolds through notes exchanged between Tiffy and Leon, who begin to fall for each other while sharing a flat – and a bed – at different times of the day.
To save money, two strangers in London share the same bed, taking turns sleeping in it because they work opposite shifts. They communicate only by leaving notes for each other, and watching this unusual connection develop is one of the most appealing parts of the story.
This novel shares a similar heartwarming and relatable feel with Remarkably Bright Creatures. If you enjoy romantic stories, this would be a great book to pick up next.
Heart The Lover
Lily King’s newest novel, Heart the Lover, is perhaps her best yet. It’s a compelling story about young love and the difficulties of relationships, following Jordan as she navigates romances with two different men in the 1980s.
This book can be emotionally powerful, but it consistently and beautifully portrays the intense feelings and passions of young people. The way these emotions play out within a love triangle offers a really insightful and thought-provoking look at youth.
Though not always cheerful, the novel Heart of the Lover captivates readers with its well-developed characters and easy-to-follow writing style. Like the character Tova as she learns about her son Erik, the story delves into themes of youth and reflection on the past.
The God Of The Woods
Liz Moore’s novel, The God of the Woods, is a compelling and emotional story. It centers on Barbara Van Laar, who vanishes from summer camp in 1975, fourteen years after her brother disappeared under similar mysterious circumstances.
Compared to Remarkably Bright Creatures, God of the Woods is a more gripping and intense read, but still beautifully written. It’s a well-developed story with thoughtful observations about social class and how the past comes to light, making it one of the year’s best books so far.
If you enjoyed Van Pelt’s book and are particularly interested in learning more about what happened to Erik, this is a great next book to pick up.
The House In The Cerulean Sea
TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea is a heartwarming fantasy story that focuses on the importance of community and kindness. It follows Linus Baker as he investigates a home for magical children – one of whom is believed to be the Antichrist.
Linus’s journey isn’t filled with the expected perils, but instead leads him to a quirky and heartwarming group of people who become his chosen family. The novel is a tender, comforting, and remarkably well-written story.
Like in Remarkably Bright Creatures, there is a great focus here on community and found family.
The Nightingale
Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale is a powerful and moving World War II story centered on two sisters and their struggle to survive. It’s an inspiring novel that beautifully portrays the resilience of women, featuring characters that readers will quickly become invested in.
Kristin Hannah’s novel, The Nightingale, is a moving story about bravery in the face of hardship, and it’s being adapted into a film scheduled for release next year. The movie will star Dakota and Elle Fanning.
Although this novel isn’t quite like Remarkably Bright Creatures, both books share a knack for creating characters that are detailed and feel very real.
Where The Red Fern Grows
A key theme in Remarkably Bright Creatures that hasn’t been discussed much is the connection between humans and animals. A classic example of this in literature is Where the Red Fern Grows, which beautifully portrays the strong relationship between a boy and his dogs.
We can learn a lot from animals. In the novel Red Fern, animals show us the importance of loyalty and love. And in Remarkably Bright Creatures, Marcellus the octopus helps us understand grief, forgiveness, and how to heal. The bond we share with animals is a vital part of the human experience.
Despite its heartbreaking moments and a devastating loss, Where the Red Fern Grows is a moving story that continues to be considered an American classic.
Lessons In Chemistry
Bonnie Garmus’s novel, Lessons in Chemistry, is a heartwarming story about healing and a celebration of women’s strength. It follows Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist in the 1960s who loses her job and unexpectedly finds a new career hosting a cooking show, where she uses her scientific knowledge in a unique way.
Zott is driven by the memory of her partner, Calvin, who tragically died. Her journey echoes Tova’s, as both women grapple with loss and cherished memories of loved ones like Erik.
Lewis Pullman, known for his role in Remarkably Bright Creatures, plays Calvin in the Apple TV series based on this novel. Both the book and the TV show are definitely worth checking out.
The Music Of Bees
Among the books on this list, The Music of Bees feels most similar to Remarkably Bright Creatures. It tells the story of several people from different generations who connect while working with bees, and each character is dealing with their own personal challenges.
This novel is a heartwarming and enjoyable read, while also offering a fascinating look into the world of beekeeping. It’s well-written, cleverly plotted, and promotes a positive message about the environment, making it a book you won’t want to miss.
While Remarkably Bright Creatures is excellent as both a book and a film, many other stories explore similar themes and ideas. If you enjoyed it and are looking for something else to read, here are ten other wonderful novels you might like.
