Zachary Levi’s Survival Thriller Based on a True Story Quietly Becomes a Global Streaming Hit

The survival thriller quietly launched late last year and has since become a popular streaming choice, currently attracting viewers on Amazon Prime.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Not Without Hope is currently the most popular film on Prime Video in New Zealand and the second most popular in Australia, a position it’s held for the last week. It’s also gaining traction in the United States, moving from the #10 spot to #6 on Amazon’s rental chart in just a few days.

Not Without Hope Is Based on a True Story

The film Not Without Hope is based on the true story detailed in the book of the same name, written by Nick Schuyler and Jeré Longman. E. Nicholas Mariani adapted the book into a movie, which tells the story of a 2009 boating accident where Schuyler was the only person to survive.

On February 28, 2009, Schuyler, along with NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith, and Will Bleakley, were fishing in a small boat off the Mexican coast. When their anchor got stuck, trying to free it caused the boat to flip over, leaving the four friends stranded at sea and fighting to survive.

Carnahan not only wrote the screenplay but also directed the film, which is based on a true story. He’s a filmmaker famous for directing action movies like The A-Team and The Grey, both starring Liam Neeson. More recently, he directed a film featuring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Zachary Levi played Schuyler in the film Not Without Hope. Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell, and Marshall Cook starred as Cooper, Smith, and Bleakley. Josh Duhamel joined the cast as Captain Timothy Close, a Coast Guard officer who led the search for the friends lost at sea.

Critics generally liked the film Not Without Hope. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 75% approval rating based on 12 reviews, indicating a ‘fresh’ rating. Viewers gave it a slightly lower score of 63%, based on more than 100 ratings.

Despite a disappointing theatrical release – the film only earned $152,000 at the box office compared to its $18 million budget – Not Without Hope is now gaining popularity. It’s currently performing very well on Amazon’s rental chart, suggesting it’s finally reaching viewers.

Levi’s next project is the action film Hotel Tehran, directed by Guy Moshe. The film originated from an idea by Bazzel Baz, a former CIA intelligence officer. The cast also includes Annet Mahendru, Grant Harvey, Augusto Aguilera, and Elnaaz Norouzi.
