‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Season 2 Is Confirmed To Include 6 Marvel Characters From Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Movies (But as New Versions)

The popular characters from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies will return in Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney+. Maguire’s films were incredibly influential, helping to launch the wave of modern superhero movies we see today. Although there’s talk he might appear in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, fans will definitely be seeing characters from his films again in the near future.

As a big fan of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies, I’m really excited to hear that six characters from those films are getting a fresh take in Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man! Those movies did such a great job of fleshing out Peter Parker’s world, and those supporting characters really stuck with me. It’s cool that they’re bringing those familiar faces into the animated series, but with a twist – they’ll be reimagined for a new generation and fit into a different version of the Marvel Universe than what we’ve seen in the MCU.

6 Tobey Maguire Trilogy Characters in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2

Spider-Man

Leading the list of characters appearing in both projects is Spider-Man. In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the character—played by Hudson Thames—is Peter Parker navigating an alternate universe after the events of Captain America: Civil War and battling various villains who threaten New York City. He receives support from Norman Osborn, who provides him with new Spider-Man suits and helps him develop as a hero.

Peter Parker, famously known as Spider-Man, first gained widespread attention in 2002 thanks to Tobey Maguire’s performance in Sam Raimi’s movies. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, he transforms into New York City’s heroic protector, battling dangerous enemies like the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Sandman.

Norman Osborn

Willem Dafoe famously played Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man film, becoming Peter Parker’s most recognizable enemy. He also made brief appearances in the sequels. The character of Osborn experimented with a serum intended to improve performance, but it ultimately caused madness and the emergence of his villainous alter ego, the Green Goblin.

Colman Domingo plays Norman Osborn in Season 1 and will continue in the role for Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Initially, his character acts as a guide for Peter Parker after discovering his secret identity. However, Season 2 suggests Norman Osborn may begin to fully embrace his well-known role as a villain.

Harry Osborn

James Franco played a key supporting role in all three Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi. He portrayed Harry Osborn, who starts as Peter Parker’s best friend but later becomes his enemy. Harry wrongly believes Spider-Man killed his father, and after discovering Peter is Spider-Man, he transforms into the New Goblin, creating conflict and excitement in the third film.

In the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Zeno Robinson provides the voice for Harry, a well-known social media personality who goes to high school with Peter. Harry playfully refers to himself as Spider-Man’s “dude at the desk,” a fun reference to Ned Leeds’ role as the “guy in the chair” in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He also starts a business designed to help talented young people like Peter.

Otto Octavius

In the 2004 film Spider-Man 2, Alfred Molina played Dr. Otto Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, a character who reappeared in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The brilliant scientist builds a device intended to provide limitless power, but it malfunctions, causing the mechanical arms he’s created to come under their own control and ultimately corrupt his mind.

Hugh Dancy provides the voice for Doc Ock in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but he appears in only a few episodes during the first half of Season 1. He’s primarily shown as a seller of advanced weapons to criminals and is eventually imprisoned, leading viewers to anticipate his full transformation into a villain in Season 2.

Gwen Stacy

Bryce Dallas Howard, who also directs for shows like Star Wars, played Gwen Stacy in the 2007 film Spider-Man 3. Her character was caught in a love triangle with Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, and she previously dated Eddie Brock. A night out with Peter ultimately led to a falling out between Eddie and Peter, especially while Peter was using the black Spider-Man suit.

Gwen will appear in Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but the voice actress who will play her hasn’t been announced yet. It’s also currently unknown what part she’ll play in the story.

Venom

In addition to Thomas Haden Church as Sandman and James Franco as Harry Osborn, Spider-Man 3 included Topher Grace as Eddie Brock, who became the villain Venom. He started as a competing photographer at the Daily Bugle and later joined with the Venom symbiote to confront Spider-Man in the movie’s climax.

I was so excited to see a symbiote – one that really looked like Venom! – briefly appear in the first episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It came through the same portal as the spider that gave Peter his powers, which was a fantastic detail. I’ve heard it was contained by Doctor Strange, and I’m really hoping they give it a much bigger storyline in Season 2. It has so much potential!
