You may recall the sensation when learning an unexpected conclusion for a series was conceived by its creator, prompting thoughts like “Oh my goodness, how on earth could you consider that?” That’s exactly how I feel about the potential ending of the Squid Game Season 3.
We eagerly anticipated the release of the final season of “Squid Game” in the 2025 TV lineup. However, when the second season aired in December 2024, viewers were on tenterhooks, eager for the games to carry on since they had been divided into two parts this time. Now, with the arrival of Season 3, we have both halves and the conclusive ending.
However, following the typical pattern of news cycles, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the series, held an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2025 to share his thoughts on how he envisioned the show’s conclusion. Frankly, I must admit that this ending doesn’t resonate well with me.
The Idea Of Gi-hun Somehow Surviving Doesn’t Sit Well With Me
If you haven’t had a chance to read the Hollywood Reporter piece, let me share with you the original concept the creator had for the series finale.
Initially, I had a general concept of how I wanted to conclude the tale. At that point, I envisioned Gi-hun finishing the game somehow and then traveling to America to see his daughter. Thus, in my original plan, it was Gi-hun who would encounter the American recruitment woman.
It’s clear that the author implied that the shape of Gi-hun’s (portrayed by Lee Jung-jae) true ending emerged as he neared the conclusion of his tale. However, the notion of Gi-hun surviving such an ordeal seems highly implausible.
In the opening scenes of Season 2, I found myself witnessing Sae-byeok at the brink of desperation. His survival hinges on his raw anger and intense emotions, without which, I firmly believe, he wouldn’t have dared to engage in that exhilarating showdown against the Recruiter. Truth be told, there was a cold indifference lurking within him about his own fate – all he craved was to dismantle the game, come what may.
In the original concept, Gi-hun manages to escape the deadly game once more and resumes a blissful life with his daughter. However, such an outcome wouldn’t sit well with me, given the profound guilt that would haunt him forever. Instead, I can’t help but feel that his ultimate sacrifice—choosing death over taking the life of another innocent soul—is what truly made his tale so unforgettable and poignant.

Also, His Daughter Never Knowing What He Truly Did Is Tragic Yet Beautiful
In simpler terms, it would be touching if Gi-hun moved to live with his daughter, but from a narrative perspective, it doesn’t align well. The strained relationship between them at the start of Season 2 makes it unlikely for a peaceful life together in America unless somehow his daughter or her family were also drawn into the games, which would be unfortunate indeed.
Additionally, her lack of comprehension about what exactly her father did for her, coupled with her perception of him as merely a heartless man who abandoned their family, intensifies this tale significantly. She’ll never be able to grasp the truth due to Gi-hun’s demise, and all she’s left with are the garments that In-ho (The Front Man) provides for her. This is quite impactful.

The Ending Is Fine The Way It Is — Not Everything Needs To End With A Pretty Bow
I’m on board with positive conclusions too. You know, it’s no secret that the most beloved romantic comedies thrive because they usually end happily, and audiences adore happy endings. Nevertheless, not everything necessitates a cheerful conclusion. For instance, the series “Squid Game” didn’t require a joyous finale.
This show was filled with memorable moments such as the arrival of Character 120, heartfelt interactions among characters, the profound influence of Season 1, and the unveiling of fresh landscapes in South Korean dramas. However, an abundance of impactful scenes doesn’t guarantee a blissful conclusion.
If anything, such an outcome is typically one that leaves a sour aftertaste. Indeed, the South Korean games have concluded, but corruption seems to be rampant, and those with power will undoubtedly exploit it for their own gain. It’s hardly surprising that similar incidents occurred in America at the end, as this is exactly what might transpire in reality.
The storyline of Squid Game is harsh yet authentic, and the conclusion it chose was fitting. Not every hero can survive, and not every corrupt regime collapses completely. Occasionally, a small flame can rekindle somewhere, leading to even greater devastation than before.
Certainly! I have to find some top-notch shows on Netflix to fill the void in my heart that Squid Game left behind. I’ll return with updates once there’s more information about David Fincher’s adaptation.
