‘You Don’t Have To Do It.’ Insiders Recall Johnny Depp’s Sister Warning Him Not To Marry Amber Heard So Fast

With the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case back in the news, people are looking back at how their relationship began, especially right before they got married. Following Amber Heard’s recent public statements about the aftermath of their legal fight, reports are resurfacing about worries raised before the wedding – including a warning supposedly given by Depp’s sister.

Vanity Fair reports that sources close to Johnny Depp say his relationship was already rocky before he married Amber Heard in February 2015. One particularly noteworthy attempt to address the issues came from Depp’s sister, Christi Dembrowski, who also managed his finances. According to those with knowledge of the situation, her message was straightforward and pressing.

You don’t have to do it. Don’t do it.

Musician and friend Bruce Witkin remembers that he and Dembrowski both advised the Sweeney Todd actor to postpone the wedding, emphasizing that he wasn’t being pressured by anyone else. Witkin states that Dembrowski became upset, crying as she tried to convince her brother to think it over and also suggested they at least have a prenuptial agreement to protect themselves.

Even with concerns raised, the wedding plans proceeded rapidly. It was reported that Heard wanted to get married before Depp began filming the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which would require him to live in Australia for several months. Heard later stated she hoped marriage would provide a sense of security. However, Depp’s team saw the rush differently, with some believing the timing was driven by financial considerations related to how their assets would be divided once filming started.

Those who worked with Depp described the time leading up to his wedding as disorganized. Several staff members didn’t realize a wedding was planned until just a few days before it happened. The ceremony in Los Angeles was reportedly stressful and rushed, and Depp himself privately questioned whether he should go through with it on the day of the event. His bodyguard, Malcolm Connolly, remembered directly asking him if he was sure, and Depp supposedly admitted he didn’t want to, but felt trapped and unable to cancel.

Let me tell you, the reports from that initial ceremony were… unsettling. Apparently, it was a very small gathering, and you could just feel the awkwardness. There were even whispers of pretty heavy drug use. And get this – Johnny Depp’s own mother reportedly voiced her concerns during the vows, making comments loud enough for everyone to hear! Despite all that tension, they did manage to say ‘I do,’ and then, just days later, they threw a much larger, more celebratory wedding on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas. It was a bizarre contrast, to say the least.

Guests described the island wedding as chaotic and filled with tension, and reported that the famous actor seemed distant. Sources say Amber Heard took the lead in hosting the event. Many attendees observed that most of the guests were Heard’s friends and family, which led Johnny Depp’s team to believe it wasn’t a joint celebration.

Looking back, the initial worries about the relationship seem much more important now that the marriage has fallen apart. They separated in 2016, leading to years of lawsuits, accusations, and public attention that finally came to a head with the 2022 defamation trial. Although both individuals tell very different stories about what happened privately, many reports suggest problems existed in the marriage long before it ended up in court.

Now that Heard has stated she doesn’t want to discuss her past publicly, and with Depp rebuilding his career, these stories highlight how many people around the actor predicted problems and attempted to intervene before they escalated – but ultimately failed.
