The Yellowstone universe has shifted its focus from Kevin Costner’s John Dutton to his son, Kayce Dutton, portrayed by Luke Grimes, and the latest episode of Marshals clearly demonstrates that Kayce is a stronger lead character than his father ever was. Costner led the show for five seasons before his character’s departure in Yellowstone Season 5.
The main Yellowstone series ended after disagreements between its creator, Taylor Sheridan, and actor Kevin Costner led to Costner leaving the show. But the story isn’t over! Yellowstone is continuing with two new shows. One is Marshals on CBS, focusing on Kayce, and another, coming to Paramount+, is called Dutton Ranch. It will follow Beth and Rip, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser returning as those characters.
Kayce Rises As John Dutton’s True Yellowstone Successor In Marshals
Although Kevin Costner is no longer involved with the next chapter of the Yellowstone universe, his character’s storyline continues through Kayce Dutton in Lawmen: Bass Reeves (formerly Marshals). This new series expands on the themes of family and power established in Yellowstone. Even though Kayce sold the Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Tribe during Yellowstone Season 5, the ranch’s history and impact still play a role in his journey as a lawman.
The new series Marshals cleverly weaves in several storylines from Yellowstone within its focused, case-of-the-week structure. It introduces characters like Chief Deputy US Marshal Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) and Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz), who hold old resentments towards John Dutton and now take them out on Kayce, solidifying Kayce’s role as John’s successor.
Kayce is now working with the US Marshals in his own series, teaming up again with his friend and former Navy SEAL, Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green). Though Kayce hopes to escape a life of violence, his peaceful existence at East Camp doesn’t last long. His commitment to protecting those in need in Montana pulls him back into dangerous work.
However, Kayce’s work as a federal agent makes him a target, potentially reigniting old rivalries. He’s a central figure in the Yellowstone universe, and his journey is essential to the story. Given that the show focuses on family, power, and inheritance, Kayce’s development in Marshals feels inevitable.
Yellowstone Proves Kayce Is A Better Father Than John Dutton In Marshals
I’ve been a big fan of both John and Kayce Dutton, but I think Kayce really shone in a way his father didn’t in the episode ‘Marshals’ – specifically, episode six. It followed the US Marshals as they wrapped up a really important case: bringing home a group of Indigenous teenagers who had been kidnapped and caught up in a terrible human trafficking situation. Seeing Kayce handle that, and the resolution of that story, felt particularly powerful to me.
Okay, so things really ramp up when Kayce and his son run into a young girl named Hayley at a Wyoming truck stop. It turns out she’s been missing for months, and that discovery pulls in the US Marshals. Honestly, the way this storyline unfolds feels like a beautiful tribute to Kayce’s wife, especially knowing what we learned about her earlier in the series. It adds a really emotional weight to the whole investigation.
Following a difficult event, Kayce and his son Tate journey to Wyoming to try and sell a wild horse that Kayce once intended to train as a gift for Monica. The horse unexpectedly leads them to Hayley, and bringing her home safely becomes Kayce’s way of supporting Monica’s work to help Indigenous women.
Tate and his father clash when Kayce focuses on a case instead of attending a memorial for Monica. However, after Kayce successfully finds the missing teens, Tate realizes his father is grieving and honoring Monica in his own way. Kayce eventually does attend the memorial, prioritizing support for his son and standing by him when it counts.
Kayce’s dedication to Tate demonstrates a commitment to being present for his son in a way his father, John, wasn’t. While John had some good qualities, he often failed to provide the support Kayce needed, famously resorting to a painful branding ritual instead. This makes Kayce’s parenting a significant and touching improvement over his own upbringing.
