Yelena Belova’s death in the last Marvel Cinematic Universe release of 2025 was a significant moment, and it really highlights what many people are now realizing about the Multiverse Saga. With all of the 2025 Marvel movies and shows now out – and Wonder Man delayed until January 2026 – Marvel Studios has no further releases planned for the year.
The last project Marvel released this year was a big surprise. The show explored the multiverse and featured the return of many beloved characters, this time in animated form. The episode was surprisingly violent, even for a show intended for mature audiences, and featured the shocking death of Yelena, among others.
Yelena Belova Is One Of The Many Deaths Of Marvel Zombies
The new Marvel series, Marvel Zombies, premiered on Disney+ on September 24th. It’s a continuation of the story from the What If…? episode, What If… Zombies?! The show follows Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, as she teams up with other heroes to try and save the world from a zombie outbreak and its ruler, Wanda Maximoff, the Queen of the Dead.
As expected for its mature rating, Marvel Zombies is a very dark and violent show, with characters meeting gruesome ends. We see beloved heroes die in shocking ways, including being decapitated or dismembered. Sadly, those who don’t survive include popular MCU characters like Thor, Blade, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, and Yelena Belova, among others. All of these deaths are genuinely heartbreaking.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking death in Marvel Zombies is Yelena’s. Florence Pugh’s character dies while helping Ms. Marvel’s team escape the Raft, which is being invaded by zombies after Namor turns. She bravely sacrifices herself to ensure the heroes get away, sinking and destroying the Raft in the process.
The Multiverse Saga Made Yelena Belova Its Best New Character
Yelena’s death in Marvel Zombies is particularly moving because of how it happens. But a major reason it resonates so strongly with audiences is Florence Pugh’s performance as Yelena in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe during the Multiverse Saga. Despite the introduction of many new characters recently, Yelena Belova stands out as the most successful and impactful addition to the MCU so far.
Many of the new characters introduced during the Multiverse Saga have only made brief appearances or haven’t had significant storylines, or both. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova is a clear exception. She’s appeared in Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thunderbolts, and her character has undergone a remarkable journey – from a trained assassin in the Red Room, to being used as a pawn against Hawkeye, and ultimately becoming a leader of the New Avengers. Because of this strong development and consistent presence, Yelena stands out as a central figure in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
