Marvel has announced that season two of X-Men ’97 will feature several important new characters and teams. Fans can expect the season to arrive on Disney+ around summer 2026, and to keep viewers engaged until then, Marvel has also released a new comic series that will lead into the new season’s events.
Marvel Comics revealed that a five-issue comic book series, X-Men ’97: Season Two, will arrive on June 3, 2026. Written by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Salva Espin, the series will introduce significant new characters and teams, and will directly connect the events of Season 1 to the upcoming episodes.
After a devastating season finale where Earth faced an asteroid threat, the X-Men have been flung across different time periods. Based on trailers shown at New York Comic Con 2025 and footage from D23 2024, we can get a good sense of the new characters Marvel is introducing in Season 2 and how they fit into the story.
Season 2 introduces three powerful new villains. Sabretooth, Wolverine’s classic enemy, returns after not appearing in Season 1. Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth, was a major character in the original X-Men: The Animated Series and will play a significant role this season. Additionally, Lady Deathstrike, another villain closely connected to Wolverine, has been confirmed to appear.

The New York Comic Con trailer suggests Lady Deathstrike and Wolverine have temporarily teamed up with the X-Men to fight a common threat, but this partnership probably won’t last. In the comics, Lady Deathstrike is the daughter of the scientist who created the process for bonding Adamantium to skeletons. After Wolverine kills her father, she covers her own bones with Adamantium and vows to get revenge.

Omega Red is the third new villain revealed, and he’s a former Soviet soldier bonded with a powerful metal called Carbonadium. We got a quick look at him in the New York Comic Con trailer, where he used his Carbonadium tentacles in what looks like a big fight. In the comics, Omega Red is known as one of Wolverine’s most dangerous enemies.
Psylocke will have a bigger part in Season 2. She was a character in the original 1990s cartoon and briefly appeared at the end of X-Men ’97 Season 1 with what looked like Alpha Flight, Canada’s top superhero team. This suggests Alpha Flight might be featured more in the new season, especially now that Psylocke is confirmed to return. In the comics, Psylocke and Bishop have a shared history, and since Bishop is a key character in Season 2, we might see their storylines connect again.

Neve Campbell will voice Polaris, who is joining the cast. As the daughter of Magneto, Lorna Dane, also known as Polaris, has similar magnetic abilities, but she’s more practical in her outlook. This is the first time this character has appeared in an animated series. Alex Summers, Havok, and the younger brother of Cyclops, is also confirmed to appear. He can absorb cosmic energy and unleash it as powerful plasma blasts. Notably, Cyclops and Havok can’t affect each other with their powers.
The team also welcomes two new members. Danger is a self-aware AI that originally controlled the X-Men’s Danger Room. Warlock is a unique alien mutant—confirmed as a character since 2013—from the Technarchy race. Unlike most of his kind, Warlock is known for his empathy and kindness.

The cast is growing with several new actors joining the show. Archangel, played by the original actor, is back, but with a troubled past. Viewers will learn that he was once forced to serve as one of Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen, and he’ll be seeking revenge in Season 2 of 97.
Colossus, the steel-skinned Russian mutant, is also joining the battle, having been featured in the original cartoon series before being left out of Season 1. New to the animated show are Kid Omega (Quentin Quire), a powerful telepath, and Hollow, a visually striking mutant with diamond-hard red skin and natural protection against telepathy. Multiple Man, Wolfsbane, and Strong Guy will appear as well.
Teams Confirmed For X-Men ’97 Season 2
Season 2 will feature the exciting debut of X-Factor, the well-known team of mutants from Marvel comics. The trailer shown at NYCC 2025 confirmed this will be the first time the team appears in modern animated form. The initial X-Factor lineup will include the original five members of the X-Men: Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and Iceman.

The team shown in the trailer seemed much more dangerous and intimidating than the heroes we know, hinting they might be from another reality. This suggests they won’t be simple helpers, but will add a complicated layer to the season’s plot.

This season divides the X-Men into four separate teams, all lost in different eras after the events of the first season’s finale. The first team, led by Professor X and including Magneto, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Beast, ends up in ancient Egypt around 3000 BC. There, they meet a young En Sabah Nur, who will later become the supervillain Apocalypse.
Bishop and Forge stay behind in 1997 to try and bring the rest of the team back to the present. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean Grey are sent far into the future, arriving in the year 3960 among the Clan Askani, where they meet a young Nathan Summers – their future son.
