Ryan Coogler, the Academy Award-winning writer of Sinners, is working on a new version of The X-Files, the popular sci-fi series that first aired in 1993. The show is currently casting actors, and the script for the first episode is finished. While fans have high expectations and might be hesitant about a reboot, early reports suggest the script is promising, and Coogler is focused on delivering a quality revival.
Gillian Anderson, known for her role in The X-Files, recently attended Awesome Con and shared some insights about the upcoming reboot. When asked about the new series by journalist Dory Jackson, Anderson enthusiastically praised the pilot script, calling it “really cool.” Recognizing that reboots can be controversial, she asked longtime X-Files fans to approach it with an open mind, explaining that it will be a fresh take on the series.
We’ve talked about it a bit. He’s a really great and talented person, and the first episode script is excellent. I recommend going into it with an open mind, because I think you’ll really enjoy it. It’s something unique and special, so definitely check it out.
So far, Danielle Deadwyler is the only actor confirmed for the new version of The X-Files. You may recognize her from the movies Till, Carry-On, and The Woman in the Yard. Because The X-Files traditionally focuses on two FBI agents, it’s likely more cast members will be announced soon. Deadwyler’s character will probably be paired with a partner, creating a dynamic between their personalities, just like in previous seasons with agents like Doggett and Reyes.
It’s unclear if Gillian Anderson or David Duchovny will be involved in the new series, but Anderson has reportedly been in regular contact with the show’s creator, Ryan Coogler. Duchovny has also hinted at his willingness to participate, saying he’s open to seeing what happens. Both actors reprised their roles for previous revival seasons of The X-Files, which continued the original storyline. However, this new project might be a complete reboot, potentially set in a world where their characters, Agents Mulder and Scully, never existed.

Ryan Coogler has a knack for developing compelling relationships even in fantastical settings, demonstrated by Michael B. Jordan’s performance in Sinners. He’s also known for his strong character development, showcased in films like Fruitvale Station and his successful additions to the Rocky franchise. Coogler clearly excels at both creating believable characters and delivering thrilling experiences. Currently, he’s focused on rebooting The X-Files, and has promised it will be genuinely terrifying, as he shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
As a huge fan of The X-Files, I’m really intrigued by the reboot, even though a lot is still up in the air. But it sounds like Gillian Anderson is really committed to making sure it feels fresh and different, which is reassuring. We’ll get more details as casting and production move forward, but knowing she’s on board definitely eases my mind. And honestly, the fact that Ryan Coogler is doing this for his mom is incredibly sweet. He even said at Cinespia that he wants to deliver something both his mother and the fans will love, and she’s already excited about what he’s written! You definitely don’t want to let your mom down, and it sounds like he’s taking that to heart.
