It might sound surprising, but The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could actually have even more hidden references and nods to the games than the first movie. The latest trailer is packed with nostalgic moments, referencing beloved titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario World.
One of the most interesting reveals from the trailer involves Princess Peach’s future story. Not only will she be battling Birdo, but the trailer also shows that several unexpected characters will appear in this fight sequence, surprising many fans.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Bringing Back Mouser From Super Mario Bros. 2
Okay, so I was re-watching the trailer for the new movie, and I spotted something really cool during the Peach versus Birdo bit. Right next to Peach, you can see a little mouse wearing sunglasses! Fans will recognize him immediately as Mouser, one of the tricky bosses from the classic Super Mario Bros. 2. If you’ve played the game, you know Mouser is a real pain – he basically just throws bombs at Mario and Luigi to try and stop them!
While many characters and ideas from that game, including Birdo, have become fairly well-known and stayed popular, Mouser hasn’t had the same luck. He’s still been mentioned in later Super Mario games, but hasn’t been a major boss in a long time.
He last appeared on screen in 1989 as one of King Koopa’s minions on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Now, he’s making a welcome return in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
It’s still unclear what role he’ll play, but being near Peach hints that he’ll have more than just a quick appearance or hidden cameo. The same might be true for Clawgrip, another boss from Super Mario Bros. 2, who was also seen in the background of the scene.
Mouser’s Role Might Be A Clue About Another Hidden Villain
Mouser’s return is unexpected and might hint at an even bigger character coming back in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The movie’s setting and the characters included suggest Princess Peach will visit a location inspired by Super Mario Bros. 2, potentially meaning we could see Wart make an appearance.
Wart, a large, frog-like enemy, was the primary villain in Super Mario Bros. 2, and he was more powerful than Birdo, Clawgrip, and Mouser. Given that those three characters appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it’s possible Wart will also make an appearance, perhaps as the leader of the world Princess Peach is currently in.
