Worldbreaker is a dystopian thriller aimed at families, centered around learning to survive after a global disaster caused by monstrous, spider-like creatures called Breakers. Filmed in the beautiful landscapes of Northern Ireland, the movie features stunning scenery and rugged mountains. However, these visuals can’t quite save it from a weak storyline that doesn’t live up to its interesting initial idea.
Directed by Brad Anderson, known for his work on The Machinist, and written by Joshua Rollins, Worldbreaker doesn’t quite live up to its potential. While Luke Evans and Milla Jovovich deliver strong performances, the film is held back by a surprisingly simple script that fails to fully explore its interesting sci-fi ideas. It’s not a matter of budget, but rather a lack of depth in the storytelling, leaving the movie short of its ambitious goals.
Every Great Theme in Worldbreaker is Noticeably Underdeveloped
Worldbreaker takes place in a monster-filled world where these creatures, known as “breakers,” are seen as nature’s response to humanity’s damage to the environment. The game’s story explains that breakers have been imprisoned beneath the Earth for ages, and human actions have accidentally released them. What truly makes these monsters frightening is their ability to infect people, transforming them into “hybrids” that act as scouts and share a collective consciousness.
Breakers are terrifying creatures with a spider-like appearance that, if fully realized visually, would be truly frightening. They’ve decimated the male population, leaving women to try and save the world from this horrific situation. However, while the film Worldbreaker introduces an interesting premise about societal roles, it doesn’t fully explore this potential.
Willa (played by Billie Boullet) is a strong-willed young woman who loves her father and cherishes his tales of a glorious past – stories that offer a glimmer of hope in a dark world. Her mother commands an army of female soldiers battling against monstrous creatures called breakers. Eventually, Willa must also take up arms and join the fight against these powerful beasts.
Although the movie starts with a strong story idea, it doesn’t fully develop the potential of its central threat, ‘the breakers.’ Instead of showing them as a real and frightening force, the movie treats them as a vague concept, and we never truly see what they’re capable of. The film relies on people talking about how scary the breakers are, rather than showing us, and rarely gives us a clear look at what they actually look like or how they behave. It focuses more on the results of their attacks and the actions of other characters, losing a key element of a good dystopian story: compelling visuals.
Regardless of Worldbreaker’s Horrendous Pacing, the Movie’s Characters and Thematic Message Give it Soul
Much of the story in Worldbreaker focuses on the relationship between a father and daughter as they learn to survive and train together on a remote island. The novel uses the father character to critique environmental damage, replacing the usual consequences of pollution with powerful storms – called ‘breakers’ – that result from humanity’s selfish behavior.
Like Jo-Anne Brechin’s Killer Whale, this film prioritizes a message about respecting nature and avoiding animal captivity. Instead of relying on shocking moments, it takes a more instructive approach. In this 90-minute thriller, over an hour focuses on Willa and her father simply trying to survive.
The movie centers around a showdown between young Willa and a dangerous group called the breakers, but the climax doesn’t quite live up to the extensive preparation we see beforehand. It starts and ends with the same unresolved scene, and unfortunately doesn’t fully develop important plot points, leaving viewers feeling unsatisfied and wondering what might have been a better story.
Rollins doesn’t deliver a boring story with Worldbreaker, but while the book has the potential to be a fantastic dystopian thriller, it doesn’t fully develop its world. Despite this, it powerfully portrays a family’s determined fight to survive in a chaotic world.
