This week, Marvel is releasing its latest original series, Wonder Man, on its streaming service. The show introduces a new hero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and feels less like a simple addition to the franchise and more like a character-focused story that cleverly uses its superhero setting. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is an executive producer. The series stars a newcomer to the MCU alongside established Marvel actors, creating a surprising and engaging dynamic that drives the plot.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II recently told MovieWeb about his new Marvel character, Simon Williams, and how he forms a surprising connection with Kingsley’s character. Throughout the series, Kingsley’s character will change significantly, and Simon finds in him someone who understands his struggles, both as an actor and a person. This leads to an unexpected friendship where Kingsley becomes a mentor and friend, offering viewers a fresh look at Simon’s journey and growth.
Simon was incredibly vulnerable, and it didn’t take much for someone to take advantage of that. Being so open and fragile makes you a target. Someone recognized his vulnerability and exploited it, essentially saying, ‘I see you, and I can offer something.’ This really highlights how much Simon craved connection – he needed someone to notice him, to be a friend, to offer something in that moment. It shows how deeply he needed to share what he was going through.
‘Wonder Man’ Will Feature New Developments for Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery

Disney+
It’s interesting how Trevor Slattery became a key part of a new Marvel series. He first appeared in the 2013 film Iron Man 3 as an actor playing the Mandarin. After being arrested by Tony Stark, he was later kidnapped by the real Mandarin, leading to a role in Shang-Chi. Throughout both projects, Ben Kingsley’s performance as the enthusiastic, yet flawed, actor Slattery has been what audiences loved most. This is especially important now, as the Wonder Man series focuses on the world of acting.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II shared that his character, Trevor, will continue to provide comedic moments, but the series will also explore new, more complex sides to him. Early reviews of Wonder Man have been overwhelmingly positive, with MovieWeb calling it an acting showcase and specifically praising the performances of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley. All eight episodes will be available on January 27th, allowing viewers to binge-watch the entire season and see how the relationship between Simon and Trevor develops right away.
