The new Marvel show, Wonder Man, featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, will tell a story that connects to events in a previous Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
The new Marvel series, Wonder Man, is set to debut on Disney+ in January. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Wonder Man, the show also brings back Ben Kingsley as his Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Trevor Slattery. Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest created the series.
What MCU movie is Wonder Man partially a prequel to?
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kingsley shared that some scenes in the upcoming Wonder Man series will take place before the events of Iron Man 3. This means the show will, in part, act as a prequel to the 2013 film directed by Shane Black.
According to Kingsley, the show explores Trevor’s life both before and after he became known for playing Mandarin, essentially offering a four-part look at his life story.
In the Marvel movie Iron Man 3, Ben Kingsley’s character first appears to be the villain known as the Mandarin. However, it’s later revealed he’s actually an actor who was paid to pretend to be the Mandarin. Kingsley returned to the role in the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, after appearing in the 2014 short film All Hail the King.
Ben Kingsley revealed that during the making of Shang-Chi, Kevin Feige and director Destin Daniel Cretton mentioned the idea of bringing his character, Trevor, back for another appearance – this time in a TV series. Kingsley immediately agreed, saying he enjoys playing Trevor because of the character’s complexity and depth.
The new Marvel series Wonder Man is coming to Disney+ on January 27, 2026. The show follows Simon Williams, an actor trying to make it big in Hollywood. He meets Trevor Slattery, a former star, and learns about a remake of the classic superhero film Wonder Man being directed by the renowned Von Kovak. Both actors are determined to land a role that could change their careers, and the series offers a look at how the entertainment industry really works.
