The recent Marvel show Wonder Man featured a character with the potential to become a significant and personally motivated villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series showed Simon Williams trying to make it as an actor while keeping his powers secret, but his brother Eric remained doubtful, wanting a better life for him. Comic book fans will recognize Eric Williams as a major antagonist for Wonder Man, carrying a much more sinister history.
Demetrius Grosse, who plays Eric Williams in the series, hints at some exciting conflicts to come. He told ComicBook.com in 2024 that the relationship between his character and Simon Williams will be just as captivating as the one between Grim Reaper and Wonder Man. Grosse also emphasized that the show will be unique and surprisingly good.

In the Marvel Studios series Wonder Man, the character Eric is intentionally presented as the most level-headed member of the Williams family. According to Brian Gay, a director of production and development, Eric is a stable contrast to his brother Simon, who is chasing a more unpredictable Hollywood dream. While Simon pursues fame, Eric has a conventional job in insurance and appears to have a well-adjusted life.
This portrayal differs from the comic books, where Eric is the one who gets into trouble and starts committing crimes, while Simon attempts to manage the family’s affairs. This switch makes Eric’s possible downfall more impactful, as he begins from a more stable position.

The season ends by focusing on the complex bond between the brothers. Eric goes to the premiere of the new Wonder Man movie, and a heartfelt scene shows him getting emotional while watching his brother perform.
After the movie, Eric hugged Simon and praised his performance, saying, “You were amazing! I’m so happy for you. Just don’t forget about us back home in Pacoima now that you’re becoming famous.” He also mentioned how much their father would have enjoyed seeing Simon succeed.

After eight episodes of delving into their complicated family history, the brothers’ reconciliation feels real and well-deserved. They seem to have finally accepted each other’s life choices, and Simon’s achievements actually bring them closer together. However, for the Williams family, things are rarely straightforward in the Marvel comics.
Who Is the Grim Reaper in Marvel Comics?

As a movie critic who’s spent years following the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve learned they’re masters of subtle storytelling. To really get a sense of how much they’re setting up for the future, and how deeply rooted their films are in the source material, we need to quickly look back at the comics themselves.
I first encountered Eric Williams way back in The Avengers #52, back in ’68 – Roy Thomas and John Buscema really brought him to life! He’s Simon’s older brother, but sadly, Eric took a very different path, falling into a life of crime and getting involved with the Maggia. It’s a tragic story, really. While Simon tried to keep the family business, Williams Innovations, going after their father passed, Eric just went further down the wrong road. Things got really complicated when Simon’s company started struggling, especially with Stark Industries as a competitor. Desperate, Simon ended up working with Eric and even Baron Zemo to try and get revenge – it was a dark turn for both of them.
Zemo turned Simon Williams into Wonder Man using ionic energy, but Simon later gave his life to protect the Avengers from the Masters of Evil. Believing the Avengers were responsible for his brother’s death, Eric Williams was overcome with grief and anger. He became the Grim Reaper, determined to get revenge on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. To aid him, he hired the Tinkerer to build a unique weapon – a cybernetic scythe attached to his arm that could steal the life force of anyone he attacked.
The Grim Reaper becomes consumed with finding his “true brother.” When he discovers Vision was created using the brain patterns of Simon Williams, Eric develops an unhealthy obsession. He’s torn between seeing Vision as a second chance for his brother or as a disrespectful imitation of Simon’s memory. This internal struggle is a major reason for his actions as a villain.
Throughout Marvel comics, the Grim Reaper has died and come back to life countless times, often as an undead creature or through magic. He frequently gathers different versions of his Lethal Legion and clashes with the Avengers. His complex ties to Wonder Man and Vision create one of Marvel’s most heartbreaking family stories. He’s also connected to villains like Ultron and powerful heroes like Scarlet Witch, making him a significant part of Avengers history.
Eric Williams Would Be the Perfect Villain for Season 2
Marvel Studios has decided not to move forward with a second season of Wonder Man after its initial run proved disappointing. All eight episodes of the series were released on Disney+ on January 27th. If the show were to return, Eric Williams would be a strong choice for the villain, as the groundwork for that conflict is already established. The complicated relationship between the brothers is a key part of the story, and even though they make amends by the end of the first season, their rivalry could easily flare up again.

The complicated dynamic between them is well-developed in episode 3. This tension finally boils over at their mother’s birthday party, culminating in a violent outburst. Eric, furious after arguing with Simon about being let go from American Horror Story, destroys the kitchen island in a rage.

Simon gave up his rising career in Hollywood to rescue Trevor Slattery from the authorities, a selfless act that his uptight brother would surely be angry about. This difficult situation might be what ultimately drives Eric Williams to become a villain.
From Eric’s perspective, his brother Simon has ruined his career and brought unwanted federal scrutiny to the whole family. Simon acted impulsively, without considering the consequences or consulting anyone – a pattern he’s shown throughout his life. Eric has always prided himself on being responsible, careful, and making good decisions, but his brother consistently struggles with even the simplest things.
As a fan, I’m honestly shocked! It feels like a huge betrayal of everything Simon built. He’s giving up a perfectly good life – his success, his family’s good name – just for… chaos? Choosing that washed-up actor, Trevor Slattery, over all of that is a crazy move. It’s exactly the kind of thing that would make a second season absolutely explosive, if Marvel decides to go there. They’ve definitely set up some amazing potential storylines with this twist!
