Wonder Man Ending: Why Simon Helps Trevor & What This Means For MCU’s Future Addressed By Stars

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wonder Man season 1.

With the release of Wonder Man, the actors and filmmakers are discussing how the ending sets up future storylines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Simon Williams, an actor with superpowers who tries out for the lead role in a Wonder Man reboot, and Ben Kingsley returns as his Marvel character, Trevor Slattery.

The first season of Wonder Man concludes with Simon using his hidden superpowers to break Trevor out of prison.

In an interview with EW, the show’s creator, Andrew Guest, revealed the finale will have significant consequences for future storylines. Even though his character achieved his goals with the Wonder Man movie, he felt “a little empty” because he couldn’t share the success with the person who supported him throughout everything.

Honestly, when I read about Trevor’s situation, I just felt for the guy. His prison sentence really bothered him, and he came to the realization that he couldn’t just accept things as they were – he needed to do something. It was a total gut feeling, and he bravely decided to risk exposing his abilities, even though it meant losing the safety of being unknown.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who was a guest and co-creator on the show, is optimistic about its future. He hopes Disney will approve a second season of Wonder Man, and he’d also like to see the show’s characters appear in other Marvel movies and series.

These filmmakers don’t see it as an either/or situation. “We really couldn’t pick just one,” Guest explained.

During the interview, Kingsley stated it wouldn’t be truthful to pretend he wasn’t sure and suggest waiting, a view that Abdul-Mateen II shared.

Andrew Guest: “I don’t think we could choose one or the other.”

Ben Kingsley enthusiastically confirmed he’s eager for a second season, stating it would be untruthful to pretend otherwise. He made it clear he definitely wants to return and is happy to share that publicly.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: “Absolutely.”

Regarding what their characters might do after the surprising season finale of Wonder Man, Kingsley hopes to be just as surprised as the audience by what the writers come up with. He encourages fans to brace themselves for anything, saying they should “expect the unexpected.”

“No idea. Surprise, surprise, surprise. Expect the unexpected.”

Abdul-Mateen II is interested in showing how Simon reacts to finally achieving his goals. He explained, “I want to explore what it does to someone like Simon when they get a taste of what they’ve always wanted.” The actor is confident that his character will ultimately be okay, no matter the challenges he faces.

I often wonder how Simon will handle achieving his goals. He’s clearly been craving success and a bit of fame for a while, and I’m really interested to see how it changes him once he gets a taste of it. What does finally getting what you’ve always wanted do to someone like Simon? That’s what I’m curious about. But something I noticed today is that whether he’s in a small trailer or a large star wagon, he’s always focused on his script. That shows me he’ll stay grounded and be okay.

Originally, Wonder Man was planned as a limited series – meaning it would have one complete season with a clear start and finish. However, other shows labeled as limited series have been renewed for additional seasons, so there’s a chance Wonder Man could get more than one season too.

It’s still too soon to know if Wonder Man will be back for another season, even though it currently has a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes (90%). Disney will need to look at how many people watched the show before deciding if making another season is possible.

Even if the show isn’t renewed, the character of Simon could still appear in future Marvel movies or TV shows, as the creators have suggested.

It’s typical for characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to show up in several different films and TV series. For example, Ben Kingsley first appeared as his character in Iron Man 3, and has since returned in the short film All Hail the King, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Wonder Man.

Given how the first season concluded, it appears future installments of Wonder Man – whether another season or a different project – will likely feature both Simon and Trevor collaborating. While the specifics are still unknown, the creators, Guest and Cretton, have plans to build on the existing storyline.

Wonder Man season 1 is currently available to stream on Disney+.
