With Frank Grillo Confirmed For Man Of Tomorrow, I Hope It Means The Next Superman Movie Will Include A Specific Peacemaker Crossover

While not a direct sequel to Superman 2, the new film Man of Tomorrow will once again feature David Corenswet as Superman. This time around, he’ll be forced to work with Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor. Frank Grillo is also returning as Rick Flag Sr., the head of A.R.G.U.S., after appearing in Season 2 of Peacemaker. This makes me hopeful that the new movie will connect to the Peacemaker storyline and build on its ending.

First things first, Grillo confirmed his involvement in Man of Tomorrow on his Instagram Stories, responding to an article covering an interview where James Gunn had indicated as such. Check it out:

With Rick Flag Sr. now in charge of A.R.G.U.S. following Amanda Waller’s removal (despite her planned return in a future DC TV series), he’s become a more natural fit within the broader DC Universe, similar to how Nick Fury functions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More significantly, Flag has a past connection to Superman – he was responsible for overseeing Superman’s transfer to the prison created by Lex Luthor in a separate reality. Even though Superman regained public trust by 2025, it’s likely he and Flag still don’t get along.

Superman’s Nicholas Hoult Discusses What Makes Him ‘Excited’ About Man Of Tomorrow

James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, is unsure how many more DC Universe movies he’ll direct after ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow.’ He jokingly admitted he might become completely exhausted if he takes on too many directing roles.

That leads me to an idea I’m really hoping to see: a crossover between Superman and Peacemaker. At the end of Peacemaker Season 2, Rick Flag Sr. sent John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, to Salvation – a dimension they can reach using a special chamber for holding metahumans. This project was originally developed with Lex Luthor’s team, so it’s possible Luthor could convince Flag to send Superman to Salvation as well. If they manage to trap Superman there, it won’t be long before he encounters Peacemaker.

While the idea has some drawbacks, my biggest concern is balancing the potential star power of John Cena (as Peacemaker) with Lex Luthor’s important role as a co-lead in Man of Tomorrow. More importantly, the film is designed around Superman and Luthor working together against a major villain—Brainiac or someone similar. I expect Luthor will initially dislike Superman, but it doesn’t make sense for him to imprison Superman on Salvation if he’s going to need his help later.

I’ve been a fan of everything James Gunn has done with DC so far, and I’m optimistic he can fix any issues that arise. With a third season of Peacemaker not in the works, the Man of Tomorrow film seems like the perfect chance to bring the character of Christopher Smith back. Hopefully, we’ll learn if this will happen well before the movie comes out on July 9, 2027.
