HBO’s series of the story is widely considered a television masterpiece, although the last season received criticism from many viewers. The original author, George R.R. Martin, is still writing the books, and he’s now discussing the long-awaited sixth novel, *The Winds of Winter*, which has been delayed for over a decade.
George R.R. Martin is responding to the frustration surrounding the long wait for his book, *The Winds of Winter*. According to Entertainment Weekly, he spoke at New York Comic Con and addressed concerns about the delays and potential contract issues. Martin explained that he consistently struggles to meet deadlines and doesn’t want to break agreements or miss them, despite the ongoing controversy.
During the panel, Martin didn’t share any specific news with fans. He did mention that he prefers to write without detailed outlines. He also explained that the recent success of his work has given networks and studios more confidence in him, leading them to acquire the rights to some of his earlier books – books he once thought might not have been commercially viable.
Some fans have been upset when Martin licenses his existing works for other projects. He explained that whenever he announces one of these adaptations, a significant portion of the internet reacts negatively, questioning why he’s working on something other than *Winds of Winter*. Martin’s reply is that he actually wrote these projects years ago, back in 1993, and simply sold them when the opportunity arose.
He’s still determined to finish *Winds of Winter*, even though he’s enjoying working on other projects like the *Wild Cards* sci-fi universe. He confirmed, “I really do want to finish *Winds of Winter* and I’m still making progress, but I also genuinely love these other stories.”
The Game of Thrones Universe Will Expand Further in 2026
Readers eagerly awaiting the next book in George R.R. Martin’s *A Song of Ice and Fire* series, *The Winds of Winter*, won’t get any firm release dates just yet. However, fans of *Game of Thrones* have something new to look forward to: a prequel series based on Martin’s *Tales of Dunk and Egg* will debut on HBO on January 18, 2026. This new show is set in the world of *Game of Thrones*.
Okay, so I just finished the new *Game of Thrones* prequel, and it’s a really interesting shift in tone. We’re heading way back, about 90 years before the original series, and following the story of Dunk, a knight who’s definitely not from the highborn families. He takes on a young squire named Egg – Dexter Sol Ansell does a fantastic job with the role – and the two of them stumble into all sorts of adventures. It’s great to see George R.R. Martin involved as an executive producer; it feels like he’s really helped maintain that core *Game of Thrones* spirit while exploring a different corner of Westeros.
The six-episode first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres Jan. 18, 2026 on HBO.
