Will Zombieland 3 Come Out In 2029? Ruben Fleischer Shares An Optimistic Update About The Threequel

As a big movie fan, I’ve noticed a fun pattern: a Zombieland film seems to bookend each decade! The first one came out in 2009, and Zombieland: Double Tap in 2019. With 2029 still a few years off, I figured Sony would probably start thinking about a third movie soon. And great news for anyone who loves these hilarious zombie comedies – director Ruben Fleischer just let it slip that they’re actually working on making Zombieland 3 a reality!

Director Ruben Fleischer, whose new film Now You See Me, Now You Don’t is set to release in 2025, recently discussed the potential for Zombieland 3 in an interview with Deadline. He first shared his interest in directing a Western horror film, something similar in style to Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, and then made the following comments:

We’re starting to discuss the possibility of making a third Zombieland movie around 2029. The first film came out in 2009, the second in 2019, and we ended that one suggesting a follow-up in ten years. That time is approaching, so we’re beginning to explore the idea. I also have a few other projects in development, so we’ll see which one happens first.

Everyone was blown away by Emma Stone’s audition for ‘Zombieland’! The story behind it – and how funny and impressive she was – even surprised her co-star, Jesse Eisenberg.

Zombieland Originally Approached Joe Pesci For Bill Murray’s Role, Here’s What Went Wrong

Back in 2022, reports surfaced that Ruben Fleischer was planning a movie based on the Jak and Daxter video game, but we haven’t heard anything about it since. Currently, he seems to have an open schedule. While a vampire Western sounds interesting, I’d prefer he focus on Zombieland 3 and aim for a 2029 release. It looks like Sony is on board with that idea, too, based on Fleischer’s comments.

If Zombieland 3 happens, we can expect to see the return of the quirky family – Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) – continuing their fight against zombies as they travel across the country. Rosario Dawson’s Nevada, who joined them in Zombieland: Double Tap, would also be back. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are likely to write the script, and David Callaham might contribute as well, building on his work with Double Tap.

If you’re a fan of Zombieland, let’s hope a third movie comes out before the end of the 2020s! In the meantime, you can see director Ruben Fleischer team up with Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson again in their new film, Now You See Me, Now You Don’t, which is playing in theaters now.
