Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first episode of Will Trent season 4, titled “…Speaking Of Sharks”! While things initially seem brighter in the new season, the show is subtly adding complexity to Will Trent’s story through the character of Caleb, played by Yul Vazquez. Caleb was introduced in season 3 as a sheriff and revealed to be Will’s biological father – a significant departure from the original Karin Slaughter novels, where James Ulster fills that role.
Throughout the third season of Will Trent, Ramón Rodriguez’s character initially resisted Caleb’s attempts to connect with him, citing his difficult childhood in foster care as a reason he didn’t need a father figure. But by the season’s end, Will seemed willing to explore a relationship with Caleb, even agreeing to a family dinner—a plan left unresolved due to the season’s cliffhanger ending.
With the return of Will Trent approaching, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Karine Rosenthal, Liz Heldens, and Daniel Thomsen about the upcoming season. When asked if the renewed tension between Will and Caleb was driven by concern for Will’s safety during the search for Ulster, or by a desire to avoid becoming emotionally involved, Rosenthal stated it was “both,” but “primarily” about Will’s safety.
As a huge fan, I was really intrigued when the showrunner talked about the new season picking up five months after that crazy cliffhanger. Apparently, Caleb and Will have been navigating some seriously awkward family dinners in the meantime, but they’re trying to connect, just in a really quiet, reserved way. It’s cool that they’re working a case together again, bringing things full circle from when they first met, but this time, Caleb is genuinely worried about Will’s safety, which adds a whole new layer of complexity to their relationship. It’s going to be fascinating to see how that plays out!
Although Caleb doesn’t openly express his fears about losing Will, who he’s only known for a short time, that’s what’s really driving his behavior. He’s struggling to understand why finding his mother’s killer is so important to Will, and why Will feels compelled to take such a direct role in the investigation. This creates tension between them, as both are deeply motivated by emotion, but neither wants to talk about it. Instead, they focus on disagreeing with each other’s methods, keeping the real issues hidden beneath the surface.
Thomsen shared that they’ve come to really admire Yul Vazquez’s portrayal of Caleb, and explained that the show’s creators made some slight changes to the character for season 4 of Will Trent. Initially, Thomsen had pictured a much more outspoken character, but they wanted to avoid a poor realization of that concept.
The show hinted at a deeper connection between Caleb and Will in the upcoming season. Creator Thomsen praised actor Zach Cherry’s ability to portray a “quiet confidence”—especially concerning his character’s work. He suggested that Caleb is now at a stage where he doesn’t want input on his actions, which will create intense conflicts with Will. There will be moments where Will challenges Caleb, and while Caleb will sometimes respond playfully, he won’t always take the criticism well, leading to dramatic scenes.
The show features some intense confrontations between a father and son, and those arguments will escalate as the season progresses. There’s a possibility their conflict could turn physical, but the core question is whether they can maintain a loving relationship despite their differing views on life. The father isn’t receptive to his son’s advice, and the son doesn’t approve of his father’s lifestyle. It’s a complex dynamic, and Yul deserves credit for helping us explore that complexity.
Heldens explained that the conflict between Will and Caleb stems from both of them being natural leaders, accustomed to being in control, which creates inherent tension. She believes the core of their dynamic, and what will resonate with audiences throughout season 4, is their father-son-like relationship – something viewers will easily understand and connect with.
The season 4 premiere of Will Trent did start with some tension between Will and Rodriguez, shown through scenes of Rodriguez’s character building a close relationship with Caleb and his family. However, the main source of conflict arose from the Ulster manhunt, as Caleb effectively took control of the investigation from Will and his team.
The season premiere leaves Will and Caleb with unresolved issues, and things get even more complicated when Will appears to be taken hostage by Ulster. Over the next few weeks, they’ll have a lot to work through. Surviving this experience might make one or both of them more open and honest with each other as the season continues, but a lot will depend on how the situation with Ulster ultimately plays out.
In the season 4 premiere of Will Trent, Caleb shocked Will by killing one of Ulster’s associates, just as Will was managing to calm him down. If Caleb continues to act so impulsively and potentially kills Ulster himself, it could create a significant rift between them. Will, who is intensely focused on capturing Ulster alive, might distance himself if Caleb jeopardizes that goal.
New episodes of Will Trent season 4 air Tuesdays on ABC at 8 p.m. EST, and streams on Hulu.
