It’s probably a good thing most viewers have forgotten about one of Will Trent’s early love interests. While the ABC police drama isn’t primarily a romance, it has included some romantic storylines. The complicated relationship between Will and Angie, for instance, has been a recurring issue throughout the series.
Throughout season 3 of Will Trent, we saw Ormewood briefly date Ariana Madix, Amanda enter a relationship, and Faith explore dating several people. By the end of the season, most of the characters were single – except for Angie, who is expecting Seth’s child. However, just because they’re currently unattached doesn’t mean their past relationships should be revisited.
Sparks Flew Between Faith & Sam In Will Trent Season 1, Episode 9
Sam Took Faith Hostage
In season 1, episode 9 of Will Trent, Faith met Sam Laporte, who became her first significant romantic interest. Sam was wrongly accused of murder and, while at court for his sentencing, saw a chance to clear his name. However, his attempt to escape involved taking Faith hostage, putting her in a dangerous situation.
Sam took Faith with him while Will and the Atlanta Police searched for her and the man accused of killing a police officer, hoping to recapture him. Sam tried to convince Faith of his innocence, but she struggled to believe him considering the situation. Despite her doubts, he led them to the home of someone who could verify he hadn’t committed the crime – a key witness in the Will Trent story.
An officer named Tate Grillo from the Atlanta Police Department arrived and fatally shot the man, using Faith’s gun. Grillo was the one who initially framed Sam, and then tried to frame Faith as well, accusing her of helping him during the events of Will Trent season 1, episode 9. This left Faith with no option but to join forces with Sam to clear their names.
I have to say, Will and Ormewood just couldn’t buy Grillo’s story – Faith simply wasn’t the type to harm someone helpless. Thankfully, they didn’t stop there. Digging into things, they uncovered that the deceased officer was actually building a case against Grillo, exposing his corruption. The tension really ratcheted up when Grillo tracked Faith and Sam down again, but in a satisfying climax, the GBI agent managed to take down the killer just before he could harm Sam. It was a smart move that saved the day!
Okay, so the court did overturn Sam’s conviction, which was a relief, but he still had to go back to jail because, let’s be real, he escaped and did some bad stuff, including kidnapping Faith! But honestly, during the hour, you could feel the connection between Sam and Faith, and the ending of the Will Trent episode definitely hinted that they might have a future together once he’s finally released. I’m really hoping they explore that!
Sam Hasn’t Been Seen Or Mentioned Since Season 1
He Is Presumably Still In Prison
Faith and Sam shared a kiss during episode 9 of Will Trent‘s first season, and Sam hinted at calling Faith when he had time. However, the show hasn’t mentioned him since, and Vince Swann, who played Sam, hasn’t been back. It seems the series has largely moved on from his character.
Considering the charges against him and the possibility of parole, Sam was likely released by the end of the third season of Will Trent. However, it’s still possible he remains in prison, as his fate depends on the seriousness of his sentence for the events in season one, episode nine. As season four begins, Sam’s current situation is uncertain.
It’s possible Sam might reappear on the show, but it would feel out of the blue. Most viewers have likely forgotten about him and his brief romance with Faith. If the show had referenced Sam after his arrest, it would make more sense, but it hasn’t.
Faith Has A New & Better Love Interest Now
Faith Met Elijah In Will Trent Season 3
While Will Trent has moved on from the idea of a relationship between Faith and Sam, it’s probably best he doesn’t come back to the show. They definitely had a connection, but Faith is now involved with someone who seems like a better match. Bringing Will back could complicate things and prevent this new romance from developing naturally.
Faith and Elijah connected immediately when they met while Faith was investigating a murder on Will Trent in season 3, episode 10. After they determined Elijah wasn’t involved in the case, he and Faith made plans to go on a date. Sadly, like Sam, Elijah disappeared after his first appearance and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
Fans are hoping to see Elijah return in season 4 of Will Trent because his connection with Faith is strong – he’s a better match for her than previous partners like Sam. If Elijah does come back, it would be best to move Sam’s storyline forward, as he didn’t seem to make a lasting impression anyway, and revisiting that relationship wouldn’t add much to the show.
Season 4 of Will Trent, with 18 episodes, will begin airing on ABC on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 8 PM Eastern Time.
