After 14 seasons, the world of Blue Bloods continues with the new show Boston Blue, which is set to premiere in 2025. Donnie Wahlberg is back as Detective Danny Reagan, and the show has already featured some familiar faces. Bridget Moynahan returned as Erin Reagan in the first episode, and Marisa Ramirez surprised viewers with a cameo as Maria Baez. Fans are now wondering if Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan in Blue Bloods, might also appear on the new series, and Wahlberg has shared his thoughts on the possibility.
After Blue Bloods was canceled, Tom Selleck publicly expressed his desire to continue the show and even suggested a possible solution. However, instead of Blue Bloods continuing, his on-screen son, Donnie Wahlberg, got a spin-off series. Reports claimed Selleck was unhappy about this, but Wahlberg recently told Parade magazine that he has been in contact with Selleck and they are on good terms.
I talked to Tom right away when I was considering this project. I can’t share specifics about our conversations, but he’s been very encouraging. I definitely want Tom to come to Boston if he’s able, and I’d also love for Danny to visit Frank in New York. Tom always makes his decisions based on the quality of the work itself, so of course I’d be thrilled to collaborate with him on the show. Hopefully, when the time is right, we can develop an idea that he’s passionate about.
Since Boston and New York are only about four hours apart, it’s reasonable to think Frank or another member of the Reagan family could visit. If Erin can travel to support her brother and nephew, Frank could easily do the same, and vice versa. Most of Danny’s family is still in New York, so he could also drive there, though the details of everyone’s travel are still being arranged.
Tom Selleck reportedly doesn’t want Blue Bloods to end, so it’s likely he’d be interested in returning as Frank Reagan. The challenge is figuring out how and when that could happen. Given Frank’s demanding job as the New York City police commissioner, a significant event would need to bring him to Boston. Alternatively, the show could simply explain that he’s taking a vacation to visit family there.

You can watch shows like Boston Blue and Blue Bloods on Paramount+, which offers plans starting at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. They have an Essential plan for $7.99/month and a Premium, ad-free plan for $12.99/month. An annual subscription can save you money. See the deal here!
Since Boston Blue is still new, with only a few episodes released, there’s a good chance we’ll see more familiar faces from the Reagan family appear as the season goes on. As a fan of Blue Bloods, I’d enjoy seeing some original characters make cameos, but only if it fits the story. Ultimately, it would be wonderful to see the Reagans gathered around the dinner table like in the old days.
It’s still uncertain if Tom Selleck will return as Frank Reagan, but I believe the show’s creators can find a way to bring him back. You can currently watch all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods on Paramount+. Plus, new episodes of Boston Blue air Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern on CBS and are also available to stream on Paramount+.
