Will The Penguin Get a Season 2 After Racking Up Emmy Nods? HBO Boss Weighs In

In the realm of entertainment, comic book projects remain king, yet some shine brighter off the beaten path, such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, which has grown with the TV spinoff The Penguin (now available for streaming with a HBO Max subscription). Unlike the initial slate of DCU projects known as Gods and Monsters, these ventures don’t belong to that group. The sequel movie is generating quite the buzz, being one of the most eagerly awaited upcoming DC films. With Colin Farrell’s TV series garnering Emmy nominations, could we possibly be in store for a Season 2?

My knowledge about “The Batman Part II” is scarce due to its multiple postponements. However, the character of The Penguin has sparked my curiosity once again for this series, making me eager to watch it as soon as possible. Recently, Casey Bloys, head of HBO Max, spoke with Variety about their impressive 24 Emmy nominations, hinting at the potential for a second season. In his own words:

Currently, Matt Reeves is focused primarily on getting the film off the ground, and there seems to be significant progress being made in that regard. Reeves and showrunner Lauren LeFranc have discussed multiple concepts for potential future chapters. While it’s uncertain at this time, a new chapter could indeed be on the horizon. For now, Matt appears to be fully committed to the film, but I understand that Lauren is brainstorming ideas that may complement the movie as well. The possibilities are intriguing, although specific details remain undisclosed.

It seems that although Bloys hasn’t definitively dismissed the idea of another season for The Penguin, it doesn’t appear that there are any immediate plans for its production at this moment in time. Instead, Reeves is focusing on The Batman Part II, which might pave the way for additional episodes in the spinoff series. Given that the movie isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until October 2027, it seems we have quite a wait before the streaming series could possibly resume.

On HBO Max, you can start streaming “The Penguin” exclusively, priced at $9.99 per month for the Ads-supported plan. With three different tiers to choose from after subscribing, you also have the option to save up to 20% by prepaying for a year. Check out the deal here!

The second installment of “Batman,” titled as such, has experienced numerous delays since its initial announcement, leaving fans disheartened. Recently in July, James Gunn revealed he had finally read a script, indicating that the production is still in its early stages. Consequently, we must be patient for both the sequel film and Season 2 of “The Penguin.

In the same interview later on, Bloys additionally discussed a significant aspect concerning the fate of “The Penguin.” Primarily, whether or not Colin Farrell would be willing to commit to extensive hours in the makeup room to play the character again. To put it simply, Bloys stated that Farrell’s agreement is crucial.

Indeed, he’s the crucial individual who will portray the enigmatic role and spend numerous hours daily seated in the makeup chair. Therefore, his cooperation is indispensable.

He isn’t incorrect. Without a doubt, there’s another character from “The Penguin” that I can’t wait to see again: Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone. Her acting was multi-dimensional and captivating throughout Season 1, which earned her an Emmy nomination. If the TV show isn’t coming back soon, I hope she gets a chance to transition from the small screen to the big one in “The Batman Part II.

Right now, you can stream both “The Batman” and “The Penguin” on HBO Max. However, Part II is slated for a theater release on October 1st, 2027, which means it won’t be out until after 2025 or 2026. For now, we can only enjoy the first two installments again.
