The movie Wicked: For Good is already a box office success! Based on the second part of the popular Broadway musical, which tells the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West came to be, the film earned a remarkable $147 million during its opening weekend – the biggest opening ever for a movie based on a Broadway show.
I’m so thrilled to see Wicked: For Good doing so well! It just crossed the $280.2 million mark domestically, and that means it’s officially earned more than Sinners did during its entire run in North America. Sinners made $279.6 million, so Wicked just barely edged it out – what a fantastic achievement!
With this success, Wicked: For Good has become one of the top 5 highest-grossing movies of 2025 in the United States and Canada. Here’s the current list of the top 5 movies at the box office:

With Wicked: For Good entering its third weekend in theaters, projections from Variety estimate it will earn between $21 and $25 million domestically this weekend. This puts the film on track to surpass Jurassic World Rebirth and become the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year, needing around $60 million total to do so.
To finish the year as one of the top five highest-grossing domestic films, Wicked: For Good will likely need to maintain strong performance. Otherwise, a new blockbuster released in December could take its place.
Most of the movies coming out before the end of December – like Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, The Housemaid, Anaconda, and Marty Supreme – probably won’t be bigger hits than major blockbusters. However, one significant film is about to challenge them.
The next Avatar movie, Fire and Ash, is a sequel to two of the biggest blockbusters ever made. Even if it earns significantly less than the previous film, The Way of Water (released in 2022), it’s still projected to make around $345 million domestically – that’s assuming it performs at half the level of its predecessor.
If Wicked: For Good remains a top 5 hit, it will follow the successful pattern of the previous Wicked movie. The 2024 film finished the year as the third highest-grossing domestic movie, earning $432.9 million – surpassed only by Deadpool & Wolverine ($636.7 million) and Inside Out 2 ($653 million).
