Wicked: For Good Box Office Overtakes Highest-Grossing Minions Movie In Universal’s All-Time Charts

The movie Wicked: For Good has now earned more at the domestic box office than any other film in one of Universal’s most popular series. As the film finishes its run in theaters, it recently became available to rent or buy digitally. According to data from The Numbers, Wicked: For Good has made $508 million worldwide so far, while the 2024 film Wicked earned over $750 million.

Despite a hugely successful opening, ticket sales for Wicked: For Good have started to fall. According to Deadline, the movie earned $970,000 in the US on Wednesday, which was down 33% from Tuesday. However, sales rebounded on Thursday, bringing in $1.1 million – a 21% increase. This brings the film’s total earnings for the week to $10.2 million and its overall domestic gross to $336.6 million after six weeks in cinemas.

With its recent box office success, Wicked: For Good has climbed to No. 14 on Universal Pictures’ list of all-time domestic earners, surpassing the 2015 film Minions. Minions previously earned $336 million domestically and $1.1 billion globally. As the first movie in the Despicable Me spinoff series, the entire Despicable Me/Minions franchise has now brought in a total of $5.6 billion worldwide.

Both Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 4 are performing well at Universal, currently ranking as the tenth and eleventh highest-grossing domestic films of all time. Minions is even more successful, ranking as the sixth highest-grossing film worldwide for the studio. As for Wicked, it’s Universal’s third highest-grossing domestic film, surpassed only by The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) and Jurassic World (2015), and ranks as the nineteenth highest-grossing film worldwide.

Now that it’s nearing the end of its time in theaters, Wicked: For Good is unlikely to achieve significant new box office records. The film earned around $1 million per day domestically, but the second part received a slightly less positive response than the first. It currently has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the original’s 88%, and audience scores are 93% versus 95%.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande continue to receive high praise for their performances, earning them Golden Globe nominations for the second year in a row. However, even if one of them wins, it likely won’t help Wicked: For Good‘s box office numbers since the film’s theatrical run is ending. The movie also features Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

The Wicked movies have earned over $1.2 billion globally, proving to be a highly successful adaptation. While the series is nearing its conclusion, Wicked: For Good continues to find success and is hoping to earn more awards following last year’s strong Oscar nominations.
