Watching TV shows and movies has become incredibly easy thanks to streaming, even for older titles. However, just because something is available to stream doesn’t mean you can find everything you’re looking for. Issues with licensing, music rights, and limited distribution agreements often prevent streaming services from acquiring certain shows.
While some TV series are available to purchase on Amazon, and a few still have DVDs, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to watch shows that aren’t currently airing on traditional networks or popular streaming services. Unfortunately, many fantastic shows have been overlooked and haven’t received the audience they deserve.
Once And Again (1999-2002)
The highly praised series Once and Again follows two individuals as they navigate new beginnings. While it wasn’t a mainstream hit, the show stands out for its emotional honesty, realistic story, and strong acting by Sela Ward and Billy Campbell.
It’s surprising that Once and Again isn’t available on streaming services, considering how many other ’90s shows have been added to platforms like Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and Paramount+. The first season of Once and Again was released on DVD in 2002, and after fans petitioned for it, the second season followed three years later.
Sadly, a third season of the show never materialized. Then, in 2007, Buena Vista lost the rights to Once and Again, which meant it couldn’t be included on any streaming platforms.
Raised By Wolves (2020-2022)
I was really disappointed to hear Raised by Wolves got canceled. It was a strikingly original sci-fi series – two androids raising kids is a pretty unique premise, and it stood out from everything else out there. It had a dark, almost bleak quality that I really appreciated, but unfortunately, it just didn’t seem to find a wide audience. After a strong second season, the cancellation felt especially abrupt, and it’s a shame we won’t get to see where the story was going.
The sci-fi series Raised by Wolves first appeared on HBO Max, but when the platform decided to cancel it, no other streaming service picked it up. Producing a show like this is expensive, and HBO Max needed to reduce costs. While you can’t currently watch Raised by Wolves on a streaming service, it is available to rent on Amazon.
Chicago Hope (1994-2000)
Medical dramas are consistently popular with viewers, and streaming services recognize this. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy, ER, and The Pitt have achieved massive success, inspiring other series in the genre. However, despite its popularity in the 1990s, the CBS drama Chicago Hope isn’t currently available on any major streaming platforms.
The show’s music caused problems when it came to streaming. While Chicago Hope didn’t feature popular songs overall, Mandy Patinkin’s character frequently sang Broadway tunes during surgical scenes. This led many streaming services to decide against adding the series to their platforms.
Licensing songs from Broadway shows can be expensive. Since viewers have many choices for medical dramas, using popular songs for Chicago Hope didn’t seem like a good investment, as the show wasn’t expected to generate enough revenue to justify the cost.
Murphy Brown (1988-1998)
Given the current interest in both journalism and feminist themes, it’s surprising that the acclaimed sitcom Murphy Brown isn’t available on streaming services. The show was a critical and popular success, consistently ranking among the top ten most-watched programs for four years in a row.
CBS brought back Murphy Brown in 2018, but the revival only lasted for one season. This raises the question of why the original series isn’t available on any streaming services. The reason, as with many older shows, is the cost of music licensing. Murphy Brown featured a lot of popular Motown songs, and licensing those songs for streaming would be expensive.
Even though Murphy Brown originally aired on CBS, Warner Bros. actually owns the rights to the show. This means anyone wanting to stream it needs to pay for a license, but surprisingly, no streaming service has agreed to do so at this time.
China Beach (1988-1991)
The Emmy-winning show China Beach was remarkably insightful for its time. Today, it’s common for TV shows to deeply explore their characters’ feelings and reasons, but that wasn’t the case in the 1980s. China Beach stood out by focusing on the Vietnam War and the dedicated doctors who treated the wounded, making it a particularly touching series.
Despite receiving positive reviews for its well-developed characters and emotional storyline, China Beach wasn’t a major commercial success. A recurring problem with the show has been music licensing. When released on DVD, some songs had to be removed or substituted to avoid expensive licensing fees.
Considering that, streaming services aren’t likely to invest heavily in shows that most people haven’t heard of or wouldn’t be interested in.
Willow (2022-2023)
Warwick Davis in Willow (2022)
Disney+’s fantasy series, Willow, follows six friends on a quest to protect the world from a dark force. The show was inspired by the beloved 1988 film of the same name and featured some of the original movie’s actors. While the first season was well-received, the series was not renewed for another season.
Disney ended the series in 2023 as a cost-cutting measure, a common practice among streaming services these days. Since then, no other company has taken over the show, and it isn’t currently available to watch online.
Ed (2000-2004)
When the show Ed first came out, it attracted a huge audience of 16 million viewers. Despite this initial success, it’s now largely forgotten. Many shows that aren’t on streaming services at least have DVD releases, but Ed never even got that.
Okay, so everyone’s asking why we can’t stream Ed – and honestly, it’s a bit of a mystery. It seems like music rights are a big part of the problem, which we see with a lot of older shows. But it’s also complicated by the fact that the show isn’t owned by just one studio – it’s split between NBC-Universal and Paramount, and that probably makes getting it all together even harder.
Because of the complicated ownership situation, it’s proving difficult to get the show Ed onto streaming platforms. Several licensing issues, particularly regarding music rights, need to be resolved first. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Ed will ever be available to watch again, and it seems many fans have also forgotten about it.
Millennium (1996-1999)

I’ve always been fascinated by procedural dramas, but it’s tough for them to really break through the noise these days – there are just so many! The ones I really love, like Monk, 24, Psych, and The Blacklist, all managed to do something special with familiar storylines. And Millennium? That show was truly unique – it felt so different from the typical police drama of its time, almost like it was from the future!
The show centered around a former FBI agent with the unique ability to read criminals’ minds – a groundbreaking idea for its time. Millennium quickly gained a large and dedicated fanbase, but its popularity gradually declined.
Although episodes of Millennium have occasionally shown on FX and Chiller, the show hasn’t been brought back or made available on streaming services. Fox owns the complete rights to the series, which makes it surprising that it’s been largely overlooked over time. There’s also been no discussion regarding the music rights. A revival of Millennium appears unlikely, and its arrival on streaming seems even more distant.
