Okay, so I was totally hooked on season 2 of “High Potential,” especially that crazy cliffhanger in the finale, “Family Tree!” But unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait a while to find out what happens next. I loved how Kaitlin Olson took that French series, HPI, and it just blew up when it came to the US in 2024 – it was instantly one of the most popular shows. ABC really doubled down on that success for the 2025-2026 season, giving us even more thrilling weekly cases mixed with all these really complex storylines for the characters.
The season 2 finale of High Potential brought several major plotlines to a head, even though the central case wasn’t as captivating as those from season 1. Karadec’s attempt to reconnect with his ex, Lucia, ended badly, and Roman’s storyline saw a new twist, but remains unfinished. However, the most impactful moment of the episode, “Family Tree,” was the shocking death of Nick Wagner, especially considering the news that Steve Howey is leaving the show. Fans will have to wait until the next season to find out what happens next.
High Potential Season 2 Has Officially Entered Its Hiatus
There won’t be a new episode of High Potential season 2 on ABC tonight, April 12, 2026, because the season has already finished airing. The season finale, titled “Family Tree,” was the 18th and final episode. High Potential season 2 started broadcasting in mid-September 2025 and had a consistent run, allowing it to complete all ordered episodes before other shows finished their seasons.
Tonight, ABC is changing up its schedule. Instead of a new episode of High Potential, they’ll be airing episode 7 of RJ Decker at 9 PM ET, and it will continue to fill that timeslot until the show finishes its current season. Later, at 10 PM ET, ABC will re-air a popular episode from High Potential season 2, titled “If You Come for the Queen.” It’s possible more High Potential episodes will be rerun at 10 PM, which would be a good way to keep viewers entertained and help those who missed episodes catch up.
When The Next New High Potential Episode Will Release & What It Will Be About
Here’s an update on the future of High Potential and how it will address questions left from Family Tree. The good news is ABC has renewed the show for the 2026-2027 television season, meaning a third season is likely to air next fall, barring any significant changes to the network’s schedule. However, fans will have a long wait – it won’t be a mid-season return. Adding to the challenges, the show is losing both its showrunner, Todd Harthan, and a key actor from season two, Steve Howey.
Season 3 of High Potential is set to resolve all the unfinished plotlines from the previous season. The show will quickly address what happens to Wagner, especially given the actor’s continued role in the series – this is likely the most pressing question for fans. We can also expect the show to start building a romantic connection between Karadec and Morgan, as both characters are currently single. All of this will happen alongside further developments in Roman’s case.
