Many fans haven’t seen the best possible cut of Final Destination 3. While it’s generally considered one of the less impressive films in the Final Destination series, it’s not as poorly received as the 2009 sequel. However, it does have some significant issues that are hard to ignore.
The movie’s biggest weaknesses are some poorly executed death scenes and a plot that isn’t as strong as fans remember from Final Destination 2. Thankfully, the original DVD release included a superior cut of the film.
The “Choose Their Fate” feature in Final Destination 3 allowed viewers to experience the movie like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. During specific scenes, the audience could select one of two choices, impacting what happened next.
There were two ways to watch the movie: one with the scenes everyone saw in theaters, and another with deleted scenes that didn’t make the final cut. This offered a fresh and arguably improved version of the story compared to the theatrical release of Final Destination 3.
Choose Their Fate Featured Better Versions Of Deaths In The Film
The “Choose Their Fate” feature in Final Destination 3 significantly changed how characters met their gruesome ends. Each death was unique and inventive – from a seemingly harmless pigeon to Ashlyn’s shocking escape from a tanning bed while trying to help Ashley. The feature introduced a lot of creative and unexpected ways for characters to die.
Lewis Romero’s scene was definitely the most effective. In the original movie, it felt drawn out as Wendy and Kevin desperately tried to warn him about how he was going to die, explaining Death’s plan in a gym. After a slow build-up of strange occurrences, he ultimately died when weights fell and crushed him.
However, in the “Choose Their Fate” version, all of that setup is bypassed – he’s immediately crushed by the weights when they enter the gym. It’s a funny scene that references Terry’s death by bus in the original Final Destination, emphasizing that Death can happen unexpectedly at any moment.
One Character Was Savable With Choose Their Fate
In Final Destination 3, Wendy and Kevin managed to save only two people from the roller coaster crash before Death claimed them. Although Julie, Ian’s and Wendy’s sister, ultimately died, she and Ian were crucial in demonstrating that Death’s plan could be temporarily avoided.
In the interactive movie, there was a chance to save another survivor with the “Choose Their Fate” option. During the drive-thru scene with Wendy and Kevin, repeatedly honking the horn would reveal Frankie was in the car ahead. This allowed the viewer to get Frankie out of his car and save him from a fatal accident.
Later in the movie, there’s a surprising scene where Frankie is taken away by the police. The film then asks viewers if they think he deserves to be saved. If you say yes, you get to see a whole 10-minute scene showing what happened to Frankie after his rescue and how he eventually got arrested. It’s a humorous detail that really changes things in this version of the film.
Choose Their Fate Secretly Confirmed The Death Of Final Destination 2’s Survivors
A really cool part of the “Choose Their Fate” feature is its connection to the movie Final Destination 2. If your choices result in the famous subway crash ending, you’ll see a homeless man. When the wind blows his newspaper away, you get a chance to read it.
According to the article, the last two survivors from the movie Final Destination 2, Kimberley Corman and Thomas Burke, ultimately died in a freak accident at a hardware store. They were accidentally pushed into a woodchipper by a moving vehicle, resulting in their deaths.
Fans no longer consider this reveal to be official story material, thanks to a statement from William Bludsworth in Final Destination Bloodlines clarifying that he and others did survive and avoided Death’s plan. Still, it’s a memorable scene that highlighted how inescapable Death truly is, even for someone like Kimberly Corman.
The “Choose Their Fate” addition is a real treat for fans of Final Destination 3, making the DVD version particularly worth seeking out. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t included on newer versions of the film, meaning many viewers might miss out on this enhanced experience. If you can find the original DVD, it offers a significantly better way to watch Final Destination 3.
