Why Maxima Could Be DCU’s Next Fan-Favorite Hero Under James Gunn

Ever since James Gunn announced one role was still open in the new DC movie, Man of Tomorrow, fans have been buzzing about who it could be and who might play them. Reports started circulating that the role was for Maxima, a villain from the comics. Gunn quickly shut down those rumors, but many believe the alien warrior queen would be a unique and fitting character, given Gunn’s track record of bringing lesser-known comic book figures to the screen.

Who is Maxima in DC Comics?

Maxima debuted in Action Comics #645 in 1989, created by Roger Stern and George Perez. She was the queen of Almerac, a powerful empire with a history where leaders proved themselves through fighting. Following her culture’s traditions, she wanted a strong man to have a child with. Hearing about Superman and discovering they were genetically compatible, she came to Earth hoping he would be the one. However, Superman wasn’t interested in a relationship with a queen who ruled through force.

After Brainiac destroyed her planet, Maxima allied with him, hoping to both safeguard the remnants of her people and get revenge on Superman. But when Earth’s heroes fought Brainiac, Maxima turned on him, severely damaging his mind.

Even though Maxima was often arrogant and could be ruthless, she was accepted into the Justice League. She initially joined hoping to gain Superman’s approval by demonstrating her ability to be a hero like him. But over time, she began to value doing good for its own sake. Ultimately, she bravely gave her life to stop Brainiac from destroying the universe during the ‘Our Worlds at War’ storyline in 2001.

How Maxima could win over DCU fans

Although James Gunn hasn’t officially said Maxima will be in ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ it fits with his previous work and creative preferences. Gunn often pulls from the Post-Crisis era of DC Comics, which is when Maxima first appeared. He also enjoys writing complex, morally gray characters like her, and a storyline focused on her potential for redemption would likely appeal to him, potentially featuring actress Adria Arjona.

The upcoming “Man of Tomorrow” film will star Brainiac as the primary villain. The “Panic in the Sky” storyline, which saw Brainiac team up with Maxima, would make a great movie adaptation. That story also included a large cast of heroes, like Guy Gardner and the Justice League. Whether or not Maxima appears, it could serve as a solid foundation for another team-based superhero film, similar to the planned 2025 Superman movie.

Maxima has a lot of potential as a compelling character, even putting aside her initial attraction to Superman. If her obsessive behavior was toned down, she could be a unique romantic challenge for Lois Lane, offering a different dynamic than Lana Lang. Her serious personality and inability to see the humor in things would create great comedic contrast with other DC heroes, similar to Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus, she’d be an interesting character to pair with Wonder Woman, highlighting their different approaches to heroism and compassion when Wonder Woman joins the DC Universe.
