Why Jack Ryan’s Movie Adaptation May Not Work After Reacher, Cross, & Detective Hole

Netflix’s new crime thriller follows in the footsteps of shows like Reacher and Cross, suggesting that adapting the Jack Ryan character for the screen might not have been the best move.

Crime thrillers that were popular books are increasingly being made into TV shows. This makes sense, given the success of series like Bosch, Cross, The Night Agent, and Reacher. However, it’s unusual that Prime Video’s Jack Ryan, which did well as a TV show, is now becoming a movie. While it’s too early to say how the movie will be received, Netflix’s new thriller suggests that Jack Ryan worked better as a Prime Video series.

Reacher, Cross, & Detective Hole Prove Crime Thriller Adaptations Work Better On The Small Screen

The Jack Reacher films starring Tom Cruise did reasonably well in theaters, but critics weren’t impressed. A major issue was that the movies strayed significantly from the plots and characters of Lee Child’s original novels, and many felt Tom Cruise wasn’t a natural fit for the role.

Many people doubted whether Prime Video could successfully adapt Lee Child’s popular novels after the previous movie versions. However, the series Reacher not only found the ideal actor to play the main character, but it also stayed true to the spirit of the books. With a remarkable 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes after three seasons, Reacher is proving to be a hit and is expected to continue improving with future seasons.

James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels have also been turned into movies, with three adaptations released so far: Kiss the Girls (1997), Along Came a Spider (2001), and Alex Cross (2012). Although each film featured talented actors, all three received negative reviews and didn’t perform well at the box office.

I’m really glad to see Cross on Prime Video doing so well! It’s way better than the previous movie attempts, and critics actually seem to like it, which is fantastic. Plus, it’s doing great with viewers – enough that they’ve already greenlit a third season, and that’s amazing news!

Following the success of series like Reacher and The Lincoln Lawyer, Netflix’s Detective Hole, based on Jo Nesbø’s novels, is another example of how crime thrillers often translate exceptionally well to television.

Jo Nesbø’s popular Harry Hole novels were first adapted into a film, The Snowman, in 2017. The movie boasted a strong cast with stars like Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons, but it was critically panned, receiving a mere 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and performing poorly in theaters. However, the recent Netflix adaptation, Detective Hole, has received perfect scores, earning a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jack Ryan’s Upcoming Movie Seems Like A Risky Step Forward For The Crime Thriller Franchise

The first Jack Ryan movies were well-received adaptations of Tom Clancy’s books. More recent films like Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Without Remorse, however, haven’t lived up to expectations. Luckily, the Jack Ryan TV series on Prime Video has been a big success, and now it’s expanding to the big screen.

Given the recent trend of successful crime thrillers being limited to television adaptations that stay true to the original stories, it’s natural to feel a bit apprehensive about the new Jack Ryan film.

Starring John Krasinski, the new movie has the potential to be a good addition to the Jack Ryan series on Prime Video. However, given how most recent crime thrillers have performed in theaters and with critics, this movie feels like a gamble. It might have been better to continue the story as another season of the show rather than making a film.

It’s possible the new Jack Ryan movie will be an improvement over past adaptations of Reacher and Cross, but it’s probably best to stay cautiously optimistic.
