Jennifer Aniston will likely always be best known for her funny roles on the hit show Friends, but she’s also a talented dramatic actress. She’s demonstrated this in films like The Good Girl and Cake, as well as the TV series The Morning Show, with its fourth season coming out in 2025. Interestingly, Aniston originally wanted to focus on dramatic roles and was actually upset when people suggested she pursue comedy instead.
After Friends concluded in 2004, Jennifer Aniston has taken on roles in many types of movies and shows – including romantic comedies, mysteries, dramas, and comedies. But in a recent interview with Elle, she revealed that she didn’t originally set out to be a comedic actress, sharing a memory from her high school days.
When I was a teenager, around 17 or 18, I was performing in a Chekhov play at LaGuardia High School. The audience started laughing, and my acting teacher told me I should consider doing comedy because I had a natural sense of humor. I was actually a little upset at first, because I saw myself as a serious actress, and I didn’t think those two things – being funny and being an actress – could go together.
Many of us who still love watching Friends – enjoying Chandler’s jokes and Phoebe’s quirky humor thanks to HBO Max – might not realize one teacher played a key role in Jennifer Aniston’s career. Her ability to make audiences laugh effortlessly suggests a genuine talent that has allowed her to thrive in Hollywood for so long.
So what was it about comedy that turned her off at first? She explained:
Back then, I was determined to be seen as a dramatic actor. I used to watch comedies and think they seemed simple and didn’t require much effort. I quickly learned how wrong I was – comedy is actually really challenging work!
Many people assume it’s easier to make an audience laugh than to deliver a moving performance, believing comedy requires less acting skill. But anyone who appeared on Friends as a guest star will tell you how nerve-wracking it was trying to get laughs from a live studio audience.
Luckily, Jennifer Aniston moved past her first ideas about a comedy career. Just seven years after graduating from a well-known high school in New York City, she quickly became famous for her role as Rachel Green on the TV show Friends.
She’s earned recognition as a talented actress in both comedic and dramatic roles, and she’s shared that while she identifies most with the character of Rachel, she also really enjoys playing the strong and assertive Alex Levy on The Morning Show.
