Matt Reeves reveals Cristin Milioti’s Sofia won’t return in The Batman 2

Matt Reeves has confirmed that Cristin Milioti won’t be reprising her role as Sofia Falcone in the upcoming Batman sequel. At the Emmys, Reeves explained that the script was already well-developed when they considered her character, but he left the door open for future collaborations, praising Milioti’s performance and the character she brought to life as ‘astonishing.’

Reeves clarified that the decision was made because of where the story was heading. He explained that they’d gotten so far into the film’s plot that changing things at that point could have created problems. Some ideas they liked ultimately didn’t align with the established storyline and the themes they were developing.

Cristin Milioti gained significant praise for her role as Sofia Falcone in HBO’s *The Penguin*. She won an Emmy Award on September 14, 2025, recognizing her as the best actress in a limited series, anthology series, or movie – a first for her work as Sofia. This Emmy win followed earlier accolades, including a Critics’ Choice Super Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.

In her speech accepting the award, Milioti admitted it’s a challenging time to be alive, and expressed gratitude for moments of joy. She said playing her character, even though the role was dark and unsettling, was a highlight and felt incredibly freeing.

He explained that he’d always had a clear vision for the characters and story, and now that’s been established, he’s optimistic that productive discussions can resume.
