Why Emma Roberts’ Ghostface Didn’t Return In Scream 7 Despite Being Related To Sidney Prescott

Emma Roberts, who played Jill Roberts, won’t be in Scream 7, even though her character has a significant link to Sidney Prescott and past Ghostface killers have returned in the series.

The latest installment, Scream 7, continues the series’ habit of looking back at its history, with the new Ghostface attacks revolving around Sidney Prescott and her loved ones. This focus led many viewers to hope for the return of Jill Roberts, Sidney’s cousin, who is considered one of the most memorable Ghostface killers in the entire Scream franchise.

Writer Guy Busick, who has worked on the Scream films for a long time, recently explained why Jill Roberts won’t be in Scream 7. In an interview with Comic Book, he confirmed that her death in Scream 4 was intended to be permanent, and that the ending of that film made a return impossible. He addressed rumors about whether the actress might have been unavailable or if the character could still be alive, but emphasized that Jill’s death in Scream 4 was always meant to be definitive. You can read his full statement below.

I have no idea about Emma or whether anyone contacted her. I care for Jill a lot, but she was shot and killed – it wasn’t just the defibrillator that got to her. Sidney actually shot her in the head, which is a very clear and final way to end things… even more so than what happened with Stu.

In Scream 4, Jill is unmasked as one of the Ghostface killers, working with Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin). Driven by envy of Sidney, Jill planned the murders to repeat the original Woodsboro killings and become the last person standing, hoping to achieve notoriety as the sole survivor.

She deceives and ultimately kills Charlie, attacks Sidney with a knife, and even hurts herself to look like she’s the one being victimized. Despite this, Sidney manages to survive and retaliate. However, Busick was wrong – Jill doesn’t survive. Sydney defeats her by first using a defibrillator on her head, then shooting her.

Even though some fans might be sad to see Jill missing from the cast, Scream 7 still honors the series’ history. The movie includes familiar elements from previous films and features returning characters who share a connection with Sidney Prescott’s past encounters with Ghostface. Continuing the tradition of this self-aware slasher series, the sequel delves into how the Woodsboro killings continue to affect people today.

Scream 7 brings Sidney Prescott back to face a new wave of Ghostface killers. This time, they’re targeting her teenage daughter, Tatum (Isabel May), in the peaceful town of Pine Grove. The movie blends classic horror elements with modern twists, including the unsettling use of AI to create deepfake videos of past Ghostfaces, all while heavily relying on familiar themes and references from previous films in the Scream series.

This film has received a mixed response, unlike earlier movies in the series. Some viewers enjoyed the focus on Sidney’s character and the film’s self-aware style, while others found the plot choices and recurring themes uninspired. Many critics pointed out that the movie relies too heavily on references to past films, which ultimately weakens it.

Even though opinions are divided, Scream 7 is doing well in theaters. Some fans may miss Jill Roberts, especially after her surprising role in Scream 4, but the film keeps the history of the Scream franchise alive by focusing on why Ghostface remains such a terrifying figure.

Even though Jill isn’t back, Scream 7 shows that previous Ghostface killers still impact the story, proving their influence will always be felt in the series.
