Why Does Hulk Look Like That In Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Recent set photos from Spider-Man: Brand New Day offered a first glimpse of Mark Ruffalo returning as the Hulk in the MCU, but his appearance is noticeably different. The Hulk’s look has changed a lot throughout the MCU, from the initial recasting before The Avengers to the merging of Bruce Banner and Hulk into the Smart Hulk we saw in Avengers: Endgame. We’ll explain the reasons behind this latest design change.

Since the movie Endgame, Hulk has usually been shown as Smart Hulk. However, recent set photos from Spider-Man: Brand New Day reveal Mark Ruffalo as just a human, sporting a green coat and visible bruises and blood on his face. Although the green coat isn’t part of his superhero outfit – another actress, Sadie Sink, was seen wearing a similar one – the makeup suggests something significant is happening with the character.

Mark Ruffalo’s visible bruises suggest he’ll be portraying Bruce Banner, the human form of the Hulk, in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This is different from his last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He last appeared as the merged “Smart Hulk” in the She-Hulk: Attorney At Law finale, where he met his son, Skaar. Now, fans are wondering how Hulk transformed back into Bruce Banner, and what prompted the change.

How Bruce Banner Got His New Look In Spider-Man: Brand New Day

In Endgame, Smart Hulk used the Infinity Gauntlet to bring back everyone Thanos had erased in Avengers: Infinity War, but doing so badly hurt his arm. Afterwards, Mark Ruffalo explained that Banner built a special device – a Hulk Inhibitor – to let him transform back into human form, something he couldn’t do naturally after fully merging with Hulk.

As a huge Marvel fan, I always found it interesting how Bruce Banner managed to keep the Hulk under control. We saw the Hulk Inhibitor Device start working in the Shang-Chi post-credits scene, clearly helping his arm heal. But then She-Hulk blew my mind! It turned out Bruce shared that tech with Damage Control, and they actually used it on both Emil Blonsky (the Abomination, played by Tim Roth) and, of course, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk) – pretty cool, right?

It’s likely Bruce Banner used the device on himself during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline, perhaps to recover from injuries. Alternatively, it’s possible Damage Control made him wear it, potentially as a consequence of Red Hulk’s destructive behavior in Captain America: Brave New World.

It’s possible that authorities were worried about letting the Hulk operate freely, leading Damage Control to intervene. This could be linked to Mayor Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) strong stance against vigilantes in New York City, the setting for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That might also explain why The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) became involved in the story.

What We Know About Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk In Spider-Man: Brand New Day

It’s still unclear how Mark Ruffalo’s appearance connects to the larger Spider-Man: Brand New Day story, and whether it continues the plot involving Kingpin. Before being seen on set, Ruffalo was secretive about his role in the movie, and didn’t confirm he was even cast. He also admitted he hadn’t read the script yet, suggesting he might not have known what his character would be doing.

Now that Mark Ruffalo is actively filming, he probably has a good understanding of what his character, Hulk, does in the movie, even if he hasn’t seen the entire script. Ruffalo is known for accidentally letting slip spoilers, like many other Marvel actors, so the studio might be intentionally limiting what he knows to prevent leaks.

Based on photos from the set, Bruce Banner will end up injured and back in human form at some point. It’s unclear if he transforms back willingly or if something forces him to change. Hopefully, this won’t be a repeat of the storyline from Infinity War, where Bruce couldn’t turn into the Hulk.

We’ll likely learn more about Hulk’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and why he appears as a human as more pictures from the movie and official details are released.
