Are you curious about what causes Morpheus’s fate in the final episode of The Sandman Season 2? The master of dreams encounters the repercussions of a transgression that ignites a sequence of vengeance. This unrelenting chase eventually compels him to make an irrevocable decision.
Here’s what led to Dream’s death and how it reshaped the future of the Dreaming.
Why The Sandman Season 2’s Dream aka Morpheus dies
In the second season of The Sandman, the character Morpheus, played by Tom Sturridge, meets his demise following his breach of a fundamental cosmic law when he shed familial blood.
He murders his son Orpheus in order to redeem an old promise and make amends for past fatherly shortcomings. This deed sets off the Wrathful Ones, who are also known as the Furies, to exact revenge. According to cosmic justice, they have been obligated to mete out punishment for such transgressions.
In the second volume, Lyta Hall takes on the role as a conduit for the Furies, erroneously accusing Dream of kidnapping her son Daniel. This leads to widespread destruction in the Dreaming, resulting in the deaths of Merv Pumpkinhead, Gilbert, and Abel. During Episode 10, Morpheus decides to give up his life to halt the chaos. He expresses gratitude to his companions by stating, “This is a chance to say thank you,” before calling forth Death, adding, “I’m weary, my sister. I am extremely weary.
According to a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Allan Heinberg stated that “Dream comes to understand he’s deeply harmed those he professes to care about. He recognizes his past actions as self-centered and manipulative, making him the antagonist in others’ narratives. This realization leaves him devastated.” Later, Heinberg mentioned, “He tells Death, ‘Since I took my son’s life, the Dreaming no longer holds the same meaning for me… I have nothing here anymore.’
Lucienne explained that Dream had reached a limit of what he could alter within himself; he required rebirth as Daniel to embody more human qualities. Following Loki’s stripping of Daniel’s humanness, the reborn character took on the mantle of the new Dream.
In Episode 11, Morpheus’s friends conduct a funeral for him, and Daniel assumes his new position as Dream. Heinberg told The Hollywood Reporter, “Ultimately, it was his decision [to die]… he understands that he’s not sufficient in this form of himself.
