Why Daredevil: Born Again Doesn’t Crossover With The Rest Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe Explained By EP

As the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again approaches, showrunner Dario Scardapane has discussed how the new series connects to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Continuing the story from the popular Netflix Daredevil series that aired from 2015 to 2018, the show stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, alongside returning cast members Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Margarita Levieva, Wilson Bethel, and Krysten Ritter.

The early seasons of Daredevil were part of a smaller, self-contained corner of the Marvel universe, with shows like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Punisher, eventually uniting in The Defenders. While it wasn’t always clear if these shows fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the upcoming Born Again and other new projects officially place Daredevil and the Defenders firmly within the same timeline as the Avengers and other major MCU stories.

Despite these changes, Born Again remains primarily centered around New York City and the events within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like Daredevil before it. When asked if the show might connect to the broader MCU, executive producer Scardapane told Deadline that while he’s personally interested in exploring those possibilities as a fan of the comics, there are currently no plans to do so, which he sees as both a challenge and a positive aspect of the project.

The writer acknowledged the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, explaining that this particular series will connect to it through crossovers. Characters like Daredevil have already appeared in other shows, and more will show up in future movies, all contributing to the larger MCU.

Scardapane explained that the show’s writers often play with a contrast between different worlds, joking about the characters being ‘uptown’ versus ‘downtown.’ He further described how the show creates a self-contained world within Hell’s Kitchen and New York City, suggesting the characters might occasionally venture outside of it, but the main stories remain focused on very specific, local details.

As a big Marvel fan, I’ve been hoping to see more of Charlie Cox as Daredevil! He’s usually stayed within his own corner of the MCU, but there’s a lot of buzz that he might pop up in the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. His quick appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home was awesome, and with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher getting a big role in a sequel, it feels like anything could happen! I’m really hoping to see Daredevil and Spider-Man team up again.

Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, also hinted at a connection, saying they’re working closely with the team behind the Spider-Man: Brand New Day project. He emphasized that while they want to avoid spoilers, the show is definitely part of the same universe and plays an important role in the larger story.

However, Vincent D’Onofrio has repeatedly stated he won’t be appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man film. He clarified, “I’ve seen the rumors that I’m filming something in London and people think it’s for Spider-Man, but that’s not true. I’m not in Spider-Man.” D’Onofrio, known for his role in Stardust, also confirmed he won’t be in Avengers: Doomsday, stating he’s currently focused solely on his Born Again project.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premieres on Disney+ on March 24, 2026.
