Ahsoka Tano stands out from other Jedi in Star Wars because she doesn’t wear traditional robes, and people often wonder why. Throughout The Clone Wars, Rebels, and her own Disney+ show, Ahsoka has always been fiercely independent, even challenging Anakin Skywalker. While some recklessness is expected of a Padawan learner, Ahsoka is a member of an ancient order with established customs. In the world of Star Wars, clothing is important, and even design choices behind costumes have become part of the story – like how Mace Windu’s lightsaber is purple.
Jedi robes have been a key part of their look ever since Obi-Wan Kenobi first appeared in Star Wars, and the traditional sandy beige and brown colors continued with the Jedi Council in the prequel films. However, there’s always been some flexibility. For example, Anakin’s darker robes in Attack of the Clones helped him stand out, showing there wasn’t a strict uniform. Jedi like Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee also wore different styles.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always appreciated how the Jedi, while super disciplined and having a lot of rules, weren’t about erasing who you are. Becoming a Jedi is a big commitment, you definitely have to change your life, but it’s not like they make you forget your background. The galaxy is full of different species, and each one has its own traditions, especially when it comes to what people wear. Take Ahsoka Tano, for example – she’s a Togruta from Shili, and the Jedi let her keep her own cultural style, which is really cool.
Togruta, known for their head-tails (montrals) and skin patterns, are shown wearing different kinds of clothes in the Star Wars movies and shows. For instance, Shaak Ti wears standard robes in Attack of the Clones, but also includes pieces like a skirt and tabard that reflect traditional Togruta style. Ahsoka’s first outfit, with its top and skirt, doesn’t seem based on specific Togruta customs, though it was likely designed carefully.
As detailed in the book The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, George Lucas actively participated in designing Ahsoka Tano. He collaborated with Dave Filoni to create a character who would be distinct from the many Jedi seen in the prequel movies. Because Ahsoka fights with speed and intensity, her initial outfit was lighter and more practical. Although some viewers have found the outfit overly revealing, it appears to have been designed to fit her character’s journey, evolving into more conventional Jedi robes as her story progressed.
